Let's Get Weird: The "Happy Endings" vs. "New Girl" GIF Throwdown

By Dustin Rowles | TV Reviews | November 14, 2012 | Comments ()

The two funniest sitcoms on television right now are "Happy Endings" and "New Girl" ("Parks and Rec" is still the best and sweetest), and both shows happen to air against each other, which for folks with DVRs makes for one hell of a splendid Tuesday evening. It's probably my favorite hour of television right now, notwithstanding the excellent season of The Walking Dead.

I came up with the notion of having a GIF-Off between the two competing shows last night, before the episodes aired, so I had no idea that "New Girl" would so thoroughly annihilate "Happy Endings" this week, thanks again to the scene-stealing GIF wunderkind, Nick Miller.

It wasn't even close this week, with "New Girl" taking more entries, plus most of the top spots. In fact, I had to snub a few "New Girl" GIFs just to give "Happy Endings" some screen time.

I was dying during New Girl this week. So hilarious. Also I want to take that old man with me everywhere.

    Is Jess still a moron?

    I don't know why I'm asking, I couldn't possibly care any less.

    Only enough to comment, no?

  • muertemaria

The Mindy Show was also hilarious last night. It was a perfect mix of total uncomfortablness/hilarity/serious that I loved it.

  • I love these shows, and Parks & Rec of course, but I have to admit, I have a real soft spot for Raising Hope.

  • dizzylucy

That first moment of seeing Nick being cradled in the water was sheer joy.

I kind of dislike Dave on Happy Endings, but his fake out move and then tripping on the curb was great. Loved Jane saying that getting tased only made her stronger.

"I like your hat. I like how there is no logo or sports team. It's just blue."
That park bench scene with the old man was my single favorite thing I have seen on tv this season. So so funny.

  • amylu

I don't even watch New Girl, but I happened to catch "Menzies." I was DYING over all of the scenes with Nick and the old man. I'll definitely have to start watching/backtracking. I had no idea what I was missing!

Edit - I am a little delighted that replies to Ami's comment are by individuals named AM and Amy Em.

    I rewound it three times.

I agree with you that these are the two funniest, but The B in Apt 23 is creeping up the list. I'm starting to love that show.

  • the sloth

Bitch 23 never seems to get any attention. Last night was hilarious. Dreama Walker's facial expressions and eyes kill me.

"Who's on beauty watch? (Brenda raises hand) Oh, dear god Brenda, I hate you.......new idea for the photoshoot, James' horse tramples and kills Brenda."

"He just gave me blue tubes."

  • lowercase_ryan

Blue Tubes was hilarious. And the smackwhich thing, god. All of her Brenda interactions had me rolling.

  • alwaysanswerb

Is this going to be a weekly feature? (Please say yes.)

  • John G.

    These shows are still on?

  • I'd like to nominate Jake Johnson for all the Emmys.

I had to rewind that bathroom scene last night because I was laughing so hard at Nick and Jess's bizarre drumroll.

  • googergieger

You guys ever see one of those couples where like the chick/dude is like something out of a whatever the female equivalent of an Abercrombie and Fitch model is and/or a model from Abercrombie and Fitch? And like the boyfriend/girlfriend is like every before picture from a before and after picture type of product?

Anyways, New Girl is a piece of shit you fauxhipster recyclables.

  • marya

I actually have no idea what you're talking about.

I do get that you hate the sitcom New Girl (and faux hipsters, and possibly recycling ), but the rest of it is word salad.

  • googergieger

Mismatch. Was talking about a mismatch.

  • the sloth

    How could you not mention:

"I'm going to need your license, registration and proof of penis."

"This is outrageous! I'm writing down your vag number."

    "It's number 1."

    "Yeah, it is."

  • Pawesl

Based on these GIFs I would have picked Happy Endings.

  • Three_nineteen

You would be wrong. Nick and the Asian guy in the park is one of the best things in life. And there isn't a gif of young Nick and the lemonade stand. Plus this:

    Don't worry, I blame Dustin.

AMEN. All of this. Excellent taste, Pajeebz

  • Wōđanaz Óðinn

    Counter opinion.
Disclaimer: Parks and rec is indeed great.

  • jM

No dreidel dance? No Jane getting tased twice? I love a good tasing.

  • Kip Hackman

"You fools, that just makes me stronger!"

  • Noam Greenberg

    Where is Billy Zane? "It's a GIF-off! It's GIF-off."
