Let the Backlash to the Backlash to the "Glee" Backlash Begin!

Are we on the “Glee” train, or have we jumped off? Have the bandwagoners been replaced by new bandwagoners who the old bandwagoners are now mocking? After the summer off, have the original fans of the show renewed their enthusiasm for it? Is it uncool to like “Glee,” now, and is uncool the new cool? Was it overrated after it received all those Emmy nominations, or is it now underrated because it only won a couple?

Beats the hell out of me. All I know is that I’ll probably continue to watch it as long as Jane Lynch is on the show. Unless they do a rendition of “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” during a country themed episode. Then I’m out. Forever.

Here’s a promo for the upcoming season. The nationals are in New York this year, so that’s where they’ll be spending some time. Hence, “Empire State of Mind.”

Never watched it.

Never will.

I was really enamoured with the first half of the season, and then they started using too many tricks repeatedly - theme episodes, big name guest stars (exception - NPH was great, but when isn't he?), flashy music videos, etc. They also completely let the storytelling fall by the wayside. I'm encouraged by some of the things I've heard Murphy say about the new season and seeing where they made some missteps in S1, and they also cast Cheyenne Jackson in a role, so I'll be tuning in to see if they manage to get back to the fun show it started out as.

Unfortunately my biggest problem with the show will remain: I cannot stand Lea Michelle or the character of Rachel Berry and I'm afraid she'll be around for a while, what with her being "THE STAR". Yes, she can sing but she is insufferable. Plus, the joke of Rachel being a diva bitch from hell is less funny when you realize it's probably not acting.

Alls I know is the header pic has me bunk-bound.

I was a fan of Ryan Murphy's batshit crazy Nip/Tuck. That had some of the craziest storylines around. But Glee just aint for me. Shows where characters just break out into song constantly is targeted at a different audience than me.

Posted by: supafly at September 2, 2010 10:07 AM

I've seen two episodes. They will be the last. There is far better fare on television and by television I mean DVD.

Posted by: admin at September 2, 2010 10:07 AM

I'm never disappointed by Glee, but that may be because I expect nothing out of it but a good sing-a-long and some fun celebrity appearances.

The glory of lowered expectations, I guess.

If they did "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk," I would forever worship at the altar of Ryan Murphy. Make it Sue Sylvester singing it in a drunken stupor that a Cheerio (Santana?) films to blackmail her with and I'll buy the shitty Glee novels. Put her in full on cowboy regalia at a Western bar and I'll launch a Glee fansite.

This show is at its best when it goes ultra-campy in the performances but has a sincere and believable plot. I'm hoping for more of that. A Britney Spears episode centered around Brittany seems to promise that direction.

And the correct answer is Glee won everything it deserved at the Emmys except for Mike O'Malley's loss. That was crap.

Posted by: Robert at September 2, 2010 10:17 AM

Barely made it through one episode, not my thing.

Posted by: Cindy at September 2, 2010 10:22 AM

I still like Glee. I don't care if it's "cool" or not.

Look at what other people have made "cool": D-list "stars" dancing, "real housewives," the entire Kardashian family, "dating" shows that are really thinly disguised soft-core porn auditions, Donald Trump judging other people's business acumen, ghost "hunters" groping each other in the dark, Gordon Ramsay screaming at sweaty chef wannabes for an hour...

I'll never doubt my taste in entertainment again.

Posted by: Slash at September 2, 2010 10:45 AM

I look at it this way: Glee is a horrible show. And I love the ever-loving cupcakes right out of it.

I agree that it has declined in "quality". I really tire of the theme episodes. The love-waffling gets old, but that is relatively accurate of teenagers.

However, few things can pump me up like a cheesy sing-along with funny imagery and hot guys. There is no very little shame in my game, kids.

Posted by: Patty O'Green at September 2, 2010 10:57 AM

I tried, I swear I tried. I really like musicals! old ones, though. I think that was my downfall. Unless they cast zombie Gene Kelly and zombie Fred Astaire I have fully realized I don't give two shits what these autotuned children do. I have too much stuff in my Netflix queue for this.

Sorry, Jane Lynch. Can we still be friends?

Posted by: Anne (in Reno) at September 2, 2010 10:59 AM

Patty, I completely agree with you. On everything. I know it's a bad show but for some reason I can't. Look. Away

Posted by: camila at September 2, 2010 11:03 AM

This show is terrible. I have no idea what the commotion is about.

Posted by: Seany D at September 2, 2010 11:05 AM

The trick to loving this show is being able to laugh at its convoluted earnestness once in a while. Just when you have had it with ridiculous storylines, there's another big dance number that gets your heart pumping and reminds you why you love it.
The guest stars are getting out of hand, though. A Rocky Horror themed episode? Puh-lease. It would also be good if relationships could last more than two episodes before the kids (or Mr. Shu) start switching partners again.

Posted by: Empress of All the Russias at September 2, 2010 11:05 AM

Please don't make fun of the Rocky Horror episode. Because then I have to get the Sonic Transducer out, and no one wants that. Also, call me shallow and vapid..go ahead I'll wait....anyway I think almost everyone has someone in that cast they want to see in fishnets and a corset.

Look, I'd rather watch this show than:

Law and Order-STD
The Real Housewifes of your standard second tier city
Jim Belushi rapes your eyes
Two and a Half AARRRRGGGG!!!!
Anything on the CW not called Supernatural

Posted by: mrcreosote at September 2, 2010 11:12 AM

I will be the first to admit that Glee lost its mojo during the second half of the season last year. There were maybe 2 decent episodes in that whole second half. But, I loved the first half so hard, that I'm totally willing to see it through. So yeah, I'll be there Tuesday, Sept. 21st at 8:00 with fingers crossed.

Posted by: tamatha at September 2, 2010 11:24 AM

Well, I do like the platform pump, I'll give you that, though I prefer the more rounded style YSL uses.

Posted by: Jay at September 2, 2010 11:30 AM

Shit. I heard in April that the kid who played Maxxi on Skins was auditioning for Glee so I was hoping he would be in this clip, but it looks like he didn't make it.

Posted by: PaddyDog at September 2, 2010 11:34 AM

I love Glee (see comments on my undying love for all things musical).

However. I take HUGE issue with the fact that the season finale sucked my unborn baby's left nut. Seriously - no woman goes into labour, goes to the hospital, has the baby, and gets BACK IN TIME FOR THE AWARDS SHOW all in the span of a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.

But I'll still watch it religiously for the song-and-dance routines.

Posted by: Pea at September 2, 2010 11:40 AM

Glee is fun.

It's the TV equivalent of a frosted cupcake. If you had it all the time, it'd rot your teeth and destroy your health, but it's a delicious treat that you can count on to make you feel good on a shitty day.

Some episodes are a gourmet delicacy from Magnolia, sometimes they're a Kroger cupcake with the cheap grainy frosting. But who cares? A cupcake is always better than no cupcake.

Posted by: Tammy at September 2, 2010 1:04 PM

I can't help it. I love this show to death.
Is it over the top? Yes. Is it full of cheese? Oh yes. Do the storylines ever make sense? Pretty much no.
But they sing and dance, people. They sing and dance.

Posted by: squeeziee at September 2, 2010 1:13 PM

You can swallow an un-ironic tribute to Madonna, and the planned celebration of Britney doesn't bother you, but “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” is too much?

Posted by: Wilbur Huckle at September 2, 2010 1:24 PM

Yeah I found myself hating Glee despite loving and raving about it. But I love basically the entire cast and though i wont be watching the new season (Well, I'll tune in for the Britney ep because I love BriTTany because she is amazing and I LOVEHERDOYOHEARILOVEHER) I have cooled my hatred.

It's a cheesy, silly, dorktastic piece of television. I cant hate people so eager.

Posted by: Nadine at September 2, 2010 1:56 PM

Hey, glee club! Write some original songs!

:self-satisfied grin:

Posted by: RobP at September 2, 2010 2:08 PM

Thank you for referencing the only ep of Community I've seen.

Posted by: Ian at September 2, 2010 2:09 PM

I like the show, I watch it, but I think it's highly overrated. It's a fun show where the writing is ok and the song and dance numbers are amazing. If you took the music out of this show people would mostly think it was crap. Very uneven in tone. However, Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer (and whoever plays his dad) are fantastic.

Posted by: Katie at September 2, 2010 2:12 PM

Common theme among those who watch it: It's not good, but I LOVE it. Count me in.

I've been frustrated with the show's quality and writing since episode 2, but I get my fix of that stuff with shows like Dexter, Damages, Friday Night Lights, etc. Glee is harmless fun. And when it's good, there's nothing else like it on television.

I feel like a little kid watching it. I just enjoy the hell out of it.

Posted by: Parker at September 2, 2010 2:16 PM

It was never cool to like Glee.

Posted by: MonkeyHateClean at September 2, 2010 3:40 PM

Anyone else have a feeling Ryan Murphy was a one trick pony, the trick being Nip/Tuck?

Run it down:

Running with Scissors
Eat Pray Love
and, of course, Glee.

Yeah...I'm going to go where the real "uncool cool kids" are going and watch Community...when it goes to DVD. (Fuck you NBC. The Grudge is in place!)

Posted by: DoctorControversy at September 2, 2010 4:27 PM

I just hope they do better than the second half of last season, which was pretty horrible. In every way imaginable. There was such a huge difference between the two halves that they almost felt like different shows. Maybe because it was so rushed? Hopefully now that they've had a bit more time it'll go back to being fun and cute again, without the heavy-handedness and the stupidity of the plots.

Posted by: figgy at September 2, 2010 4:38 PM

looks stupid. never watched it. don't plan to any time soon. i'd rather watch jane lynch on 'party down'!!

Posted by: maxpurr9 at September 2, 2010 5:01 PM

Oh, I love the cheesey-cheese right out of this show.
Other things I love?
-America's Next Top Model
-Horrible pop music
-Purple and blue flavored candy
-Most of the Cheezburger websites
As you can see, I'm clearly the foremost authority on loving cheesey things. And Glee is CHEESE. I also love real cheese. Except for Swiss cheese, which tastes like metal.

Posted by: (Not so)Blonde Savant at September 2, 2010 5:25 PM

Me? Still in. I'm a sucker.

Posted by: Dave at September 2, 2010 5:40 PM

Glee's ok. Just can't shake off my head that Lea Michelle's too old looking to be playing a high school student.
