Explosions. Sardonic droids. Diversity. Mon Mothma. Burning TIE Fighters. A Death Star eclipse. Mendlemoff. And the chilling respirator sounds of one Darth Vader.
The full trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One dropped during Thursday night’s Olympic competition and it’s somehow just as thrilling as Michael Phelps winning his 22nd gold medal.
We’ll update the post soon with stills and GIFs, and have much more on the content tomorrow. For now, just watch — and watch, and watch, and watch again — to get hyped for December.
UPDATE: GIFs and pics, because I’d never lie to you.
SCENES
Here’s the opening shot of a teeming city with a Middle Eastern vibe on the planet Jehda

Best look yet at the brand-new U-wing, which continues the Star Wars tradition of having their ships sponsored by the letter of the day.

Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) likes to take out AT-ATs with rockets IN THE FACE!

Rebels storm the beaches of Scarif, the tropical planet featured prominently in the new poster

Finally, here’s an injured-looking Jyn Erso limping toward a TIE Fighter.

CHARACTERS
Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), a young girl with a criminal past recruited to help the Rebel Alliance with a dangerous mission.
Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), straightlaced Rebel intelligence officer tasked with leading the mission and keeping Erso under control.
K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), a gruff droid with Imperial markings on its shoulder who nonethless won’t kill Andor’s friends (which in the trailer include Jyn).
MENDLEMOFF! Ben Mendelsohn’s character is actually named Orson Krennic, and he’s a Director, not a Moff. Not sure where that falls in the Imperial hierarchy but it’s definitely above Stormtrooper That Monitors Trash Compactor.
Bodhi Rook (The Night Of’s Riz Amed), a crack pilot who wishes a droid would stop telling him the odds. Sound like someone we know?
Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen), a veteran fighter who prefers blasters over mystical powers. Right hand man to…
Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen), a blind warrior who isn’t a Jedi yet manages to take out a battalion of Stormtroopers using only a stick.
Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), a fan-favorite Clone Wars character who isn’t exactly a card-carrying Rebel Alliance member but doesn’t object to lending a hand when his interests align.
The Death Star (played by itself). The space station looks like it’ll be a full-blown character in Rogue One. Plus this shot is gorgeous and I wanted an excuse to include it. Suck a dick.
Some guy with a shiny head. He doesn’t seem important and with barely any screentime in the trailer I wouldn’t expect this character to have much of an impact on the story.
