The Ten Geekiest Shows ("The Big Bang Theory" Can Suck a D*ck)

By Seth Freilich | Seriously Random Lists | July 11, 2012 | Comments ()

With Comic-Con right around the corner (Preview Night kicks off in a matter of hours), we thought we'd take a look at the ten geekiest shows presented, below, without comment.

Actually, strike that. Presented with one comment. In light of my minor rant yesterday against that Slate asshat what thought he could provide the only correct and definitive position on some issue, it's only fair that I note that this list is unquestionably the correct and definitive list of the ten geekiest shows. Piss-and-moan though you may about the exclusion of this or that show, you're wrong.

Dungeons and Dragons

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Babylon 5

Red Dwarf

Doctor Who

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • BiblioGlow

    Stargate SG1! Eureka! The X-Files!!

  • Just adding a little more IT Crowd and Eureka love. (Syfy can keep making Pirahnasaur vs. Anacondagator, but needs to cancel Eureka? Things that make your head explode.)

  • Annapurna

How is Buffy a geek show?

  • AbbyNormal

    No IT Crowd? Boo-urns.

  • csb

"Chuck" can suck a d*ck too.

  • Tiny_but_Fierce

Personally I would have liked to see Firefly and Stargate SG-1 on this list.

  • Erik N

MST3K for the alone Thanksgiving marathon kinda-win

  • David Sorenson

Mr. Flibble approves of this list. He is not cross at all.

  • Mrcreosote

3-2-1 Contact. For Levar and the theme song alone. Shaping young geekling minds since what 1982?

  • Claus

Aw, all the hate for Babylon 5? It's my favorite sci-fi TV series, bar none, even ahead of Farscape and Firefly.

  • Kinda sorry Farscape didn't make the list...

  • e jerry powell

    I was about to say...
P'au Zotoh Zhaan rules the effing geek world.

  • Tori

Yes, Red Dwarf. Yes yes yes. Yes. Lister and Holly and Rimmer and Cat. Especially Cat.

  • pumpkin

I guess you did have to tell me twice.
    (yes, I quote Red Dwarf)

  • laylaness

I'll just assume that Torchwood is lumped in with Doctor Who.

  • googergieger

Not anymore with Futurama. Past few seasons have been beyond shite. Hell ever since the straight to dvd movies really. MST3K or Community would have been better choices.

  • Basement Boy

Glad to see Spaced here, but... no I.T. Crowd!?! I'VE GOT A MOTHERFLIPPIN' GUN!!

  • Renton

Babylon 5's a big pile of shit.

  • Bilbo

  • Fabius_Maximus

Yes, it is. Doesn't change the fact that the whole background story thing makes it incredibly geeky.

  • Renton

Indeed. I was merely quoting Spaced though, like the sad internet chap I am.

  • TheOriginalMRod

    Hello?!?! MST3k...

  • twig

Hey, Mike! Babylon Five is a load of shite!

    GET OUT!!!!

  • Seany D

No BSG, no care. I know the ending was horseshit but the first half of the series was as amazing as sci-fi gets on television.

BSG at least deserved Babylon 5's spot.

  • BiblioGlow

Please don't flame-thrower me (it's a verb now), but I'm watching BSG right now, and it is the most frustrating television experience I have ever had. I don't understand how nerds like this show so much, because nothing any of the characters does makes any sense. And I don't mean in an "I'm confused, therefore I hate" kind of way, I mean in a "Why would that character do that? Why would the writers have that happen? That's so dumb. Why doesn't that character do this? Why didn't they stop to think for about 33 seconds and realize this? Why does no one use their logic? USE YOUR LOGIC, DAMMIT. LOGIC. YOU MAY BE OUT OF CIGARS BUT YOU SHOULD HAVE A HEALTHY SUPPLY OF BRAIN. Augh, frak you" kind of way.
I feel like Data or Spock because I end up yelling at the screen at least once per episode about logic. None of the characters or writers seem to have any. And I know the cylons have a plan that could potentially explain all of the holes in their behavior (it better be a godsdamn amazing plan), but the humans don't. And I'm very willing to make a few allowances here and there to enjoy a great dark sci-fi show, which this clearly is, but these seem like huge holes to me.
I just don't get all the love. I'm midway through season 2 right now, does it pull a Star Trek TNG and get better? this 'good' and I should just either accept it as is or accept that it isn't my cup of tea?

  • Morgan_LaFai

If you don't like it now I doubt you will ever like it. I thought the mini series was the best, followed by seasons 1 and 2 in that order. I love the show and even I had a hard time getting through season 3. And it had an ending that rivaled Lost both for its what the frakness and inability to answer many a question.

  • mike

i think the header pic is from Chuck, and so that alone gets you a pass for including it on the list. i might also add that the header pic + reference to fellatio in the subject line = Yay!

  • Fredo

Lack of Battlestar Galactica, The X-Files or any of the Star Trek TV series makes me question your geek credentials

/said in Simpsons' Comic Book Guy voice

  • Maguita NYC

I hereby call upon rule #4 (and if anyone calls upon me rule #5, I will kindly ask them to go ahead first and bend-over!!!)

I loved the X-Files, you must be missing the geek-gene if you haven't included this show...
Wait, you did say though that your list was seriously random. Carry on then.

  • Fredo

OH wait, I see you had TNG up there. I return your honor unto you.

    /TOS was better

  • APOCooter

    Nevermind. Brain fart.

  • seanfast

    less chuck, more community

  • Kip Hackman

Spaced! Time to watch it again.

  • John G.

Wait, is dick-sucking geeky now? As the term become so meaningless now that there are dick-sucking geeks?

  • Sara_Tonin00

I'm sure there are plenty of dick-sucking geeks. You might not have met any, but we exist.

  • John G.

Ha. Are there dick sucking conventions? DikSukCon? It's held in Vegas, isn't it?

  • DarthCorleone

A humongous boo to Chuck. The rest of your selections are acceptable. If I had to pick something to replace it, I'd step away from the fiction and pick Cosmos.

  • Benjie

While I enjoyed Chuck, I thought the geekiness was pretty tame. 20 something guys of their generation would like a lot more than just Back to the Future and Star Wars and some 80s references. Where was the anime love? The obscure sci-fi and fantasy novel references? Sort of seemed like it was written by 40 somethings who met a couple nerds a few times.

  • Dagda

I just sat through all of Farscape and man, that was a self-aware show. Sci-fi references everywhere

  • Thank you for this - Farscape owns a place in my heart since it aired.

  • John W

    The Guild?
    Eureka? Firefly?

  • annoyed

    +1 .... No Fringe?

  • annoyed

    No BSG?

  • e jerry powell

    Which BSG?

  • Bert_McGurt

    The X-Files too.

  • Sarah Kosheff

I was hoping Buffy would make the cut.

  • I know Spaced gets love from some folks but it doesn't get enough love imo. Good inclusion.

  • Spaced changed my life. It really does need more love.

  • Maguita NYC

Gotta work on my lack of geekdom: I've only been a fan of Buffy, and watched the first two seasons of Futurama.
The power is so not strong in this one (me).
