It's Always Drunk as a Skunk in Philadelphia

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is coming back to FX soon for a new season. Huzzah! And if the new season is half as hilarious as this clip, it’s going to be glorious.

See, right now they’re getting their location shots in Philly (literally about two blocks from where I spent the wee years of my life — holla back, Overbrook Park!). And the local Fox 29 went to visit the crew at 8 a.m. That’s 8 in the morning for those not paying attention. And at 8 in the morning, Mr. DeVito, god bless his soul, is three sheets to the wind, can of beer in hand, balls-to-tits fucking drunk. I love him so much.

Ohmanohmanohmanohmanohmanohmanohmanohman!!!!!!!!
I am excited.
This is reaching Seinfeld territory where every episode is an instant classic.
"You gotta pay the toll troll if you want this boy's soul."
Charlie, Glenn and Rob were on Free Radio recently and I was grinning so hard my skull cracked.

He's a treasure. A tiny, inappropriate, inebriated treasure.

Last year they were shooting a block from my work, but I haven't seen them yet this week. SOON. I will get my hands on Charlie Day somehow, somewhere.

SQUEE! That man is a national treasure. This show is a national treasure. Every time I get into a fight with my british friends about who has better half-hour comedies, all I have to do is quote Dayman, and I win.

Being drunk at 8am is something everybody should try This looks like fun.

I'M GONNA TRIP BALLS!!!

Fuck, somebody's gotta do it...

This show fell off last season. OK, the last(last, right?) episode with the musical was pretty fuckin' funny, however, the serial killer episode was a fucking mess. Dee and Dennis chasing the waitress down the street with Dee in a fucking clown costume(!) was seriously reaching. Also, was this not the season where they parodied American Idol? Even if it wasn't, that shit was horribly unfunny, like, referential Family Guy unfunny. And finally, Dee's characters she made up over the years were just terrible. I know they were supposed to be, but I couldn't find anything funny about them.

Anyway, shark jump, yo.

God I love this show. I wish I could be drunk at 8am at work. It would be so much more fun. However, I work with police, and they carry guns. On second thought, maybe that wouldn't be the best idea....

pissant,
I shed a tear for your cynicism.
That clown chase was nice.

At least he's a happy drunk, not a mean, racist drunk like Mel Gibson.

That's it! That's it! That's it! Kballs hit the nail on the head.
I watched this show after hearing a number of people praise it as comedy gold--I suspect these same people of masturbating while watching their Arrested Development DVDs and weeping--and didn't like it. Now it's clear why: just like with Seinfeld, I wanted every single character to spontaneously combust because I disliked them, didn't care what happened to them, and didn't feel any efforts were being made to shape them into REAL FUCKING HUMAN BEINGS.

And yes, before some smartass chimes in about masturbating to their own Arrested Development DVDs, I didn't get into that show either for pretty much the same reasons.

jim doggie:
what the hell tv shows do you think are funny ?

You can't just come to pajiba and attack those shows (add in curb and you are talking about the pajiba gold standard of comedy) without at least offering up an example of something you think develops characters correctly and IS funny.

I suspect, and I may be wrong, that you don't like those shows because the characters aren't pleasant good people. Guess what, real fucking human beings aren't particularly pleasant. They are wierd, nasty, selfish creatures, who don't necessarily grow wiser as they grow older.

Posted by: "luker" the barbarian at June 11, 2009 12:07 PM

I watch this show because they're terrible human beings. They're so souless and reprehensible that I laugh my ass off.

Posted by: Julie at June 11, 2009 12:20 PM

"luker":
Let's see--this past year, I recount laughing at loud at Pushing Daisies, Life on Mars, and Wipeout. When I was younger, I remember watching Wings and Frasier and not only laughing but being invested in what happened to the characters (before both those shows were run into the ground and I lost interest).

One of the few shows I watch these days is House, which you may feel free to put into your "all humans suck and they never learn" category. I can see why you would: the people on that show can be nasty and downright abusive. However, they have themselves some strong, compelling characters, doses of black humor (no pun intended), and great moments of kindness.

I think the interesting thing is that I dared to express my distaste in one of your sacred comedy calves and that you're flipping out like a fundamentalist with a cross-dressing teenager instead of simply reading my opinion and acknowledging (if not in comment form) that it takes different strokes to move the world. After all, even According to Jim has regular viewers.
I'm not one of them, but I know they're out there.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at June 11, 2009 12:32 PM

Or...as a simpler counterpoint to Julie's comment...I just don't find that show funny and the reprehensible characters aren't enough to lift it up for me.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at June 11, 2009 12:37 PM

I watch this show because they're terrible human beings.

What? They loved that dumpster baby.

Posted by: jM at June 11, 2009 12:38 PM

It's not for everyone, Jim. I think it's really funny, but I can see how others couldn't get past how unlikeable the characters are. I go into it not looking for characters to relate to, I just watch it thinking "Did they really just put shoe polish on a baby?" :)

Posted by: Julie at June 11, 2009 12:41 PM

Part of what makes it funny is that they are terrible people who get whats coming to them every time.

Posted by: Alex at June 11, 2009 12:52 PM

I've got no use at all for Seinfeld, Arrested Development OR Curb Your Enthusiasm but I love Sunny. Maybe I only think a particular kind of reprehensible person is funny as opposed to insufferable?

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at June 11, 2009 1:06 PM

I will always love this show for nearly making me pee my pants during the last five minutes of the back-in-time/cracked-the-Liberty-Bell episode. Seriously; hubby and I were falling all over each other on the couch, crying. Awesome stuff.

Posted by: sherry at June 11, 2009 1:11 PM

I think that the mere fact that I asked for an example of a show you do find funny indicates that I recognize that their are other opinions and am (gasp) CURIOUS why you think that way about something most people here consider funny. I then proposed a rationale that I have heard from other people as to why they don't like those shows as a possible explanation, along with my rebuttal.

If I had wanted to condemn your opinion I would have. AD fans don't compulsively masturbate to their DVD's and may I add, even if we did, Portia Di Rossi / Bateman/Arnett are aesthtically pleasing enough to JUSTIFY such behavior.

My point was that when you offer a significantly different opinion than the norm it is nice to explain in depth why you believe that, hence, my request for more information and a possible theory.

As for ATJ, I sincerely hope you aren't making a 1970's cultural relativism argument about sitcoms. The mere fact that people may like According to Jim does not mean that I have to respect their opinions. Maybe on the Hollywood Edition (or whatever it is called) website, but not pajiba.

Posted by: "luker" the barbarian at June 11, 2009 1:20 PM

"What's this?"
"A list of abortion doctors I plan to kill."
"There's two names crossed out already."
"Yeah, I know."

I agree that the show went a little over-the-top crazy in the last season in certain episodes.

Posted by: Annie at June 11, 2009 1:34 PM

...1970's cultural relativism?
I don't know why, but that made me laugh my ass off.

My apologies, "luker". It was difficult to see the polite intent of your request for more information and a possible theory in "what the hell tv shows do you think are funny", which you have to admit doesn't really lend itself to constructive conversation.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at June 11, 2009 1:50 PM

All I have to say is "terd merger"
anyone who can't find comedy in Sunny doesn't deserve to watch it :)

Posted by: Curmudgeon at June 11, 2009 1:55 PM

Hell fucking YES! But give me some details...WHEN exactly is it coming back?

Posted by: figgy at June 11, 2009 2:07 PM

I will admit that I wrote a nastier reply, didn't want to start my first pajiba fight and so rewrote it completely. I must have missed the hell part. That really does alter the whole tone of my point. I completely agree with you on that point and I apologize. I also could have been much clearer about this being the explanation I have heard before.

Posted by: "luker" the barbarian at June 11, 2009 2:20 PM

One man, two words:

Green Man...

bitches.

If you can't appreciate that, I feel sorry for you.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 11, 2009 2:30 PM

You probably should, Barbado. Not only am I not a fan of Sunny, but I also want to set J.J. Abrams on fire for Lost. It's like I don't fit in anywhere, not even among the fringes.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at June 11, 2009 2:39 PM

"I also want to set J.J. Abrams on fire..."

Hmmmmm, let's just say agree with you on that.

You are alright in my book.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at June 11, 2009 2:42 PM

Sorry to butt in, but I just wanted to say that I find luker and Jim Doggie's reconciliation to be a particularly heart-warming moment. I literally have a tear in my eye. No off with you two, enjoy the make up sex.

Posted by: admin at June 11, 2009 2:58 PM

If it's alright with luker, I'll have to take a rain check on the make-up sex. I kinda blew my load during that and now my girlfriend is asking why I'm so interested in Asian cultural relativism.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at June 11, 2009 3:13 PM

Right there with ya. I maybe inspired myself in that last post to go to town on my arrested development collection. I mean charlize theron as a retard? Yum
