15 Observations I Made While Watching Takers

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Film Reviews | Comments (82)

Chris-Brown-Did-96-Per.jpg

*SPOILERS BELOW*

1) Bad things happen to bad people.

2) Bad things happen to bad people, but if they’re well intentioned, there’s an upside to the consequences.

3) If you are a rapper who has assaulted his girlfriend in real life, you will die in this film.

4) If you are a rapper who has served a prison sentence in real life, you will die in this film.

5) If you wear a funny hat, you will die in this film.

6) If you were a former member of the cast any of the following critically acclaimed series — “The Wire,” or “The Practice” — you may be shot, but you will not die in this film.

7) If you were a former member of the cast of “Friday Night Lights,” you have a 100 percent chance of being shot, but only a 50 percent of being killed.

8) Not all white people look alike, but Hayden Christensen and Paul Walker do.

9) If you are Russian, you will die in this film.

10) If you are one of the principal cast members, and white, you have a 66.6 percent chance of survival.

11) There is a certain art to the shaky cam. Crucial to the success of the shaky cam is an ability to shake the camera in the direction of your actors. No one wants to see a shaky tree branch or a shaky window.

12) Chris Brown is a terrible actor, but he runs and jumps with impressive speed and agility.

13) T.I. is a terrible actor.

14) If you can forgive Idris Elba for this film, you can forgive him for anything.

15) Films that star Matt Dillon and involve the robbery of an armored truck are not fit for public consumption.

RE: Thing Number 11

Not according to the YouTube cinematographer's guide.

Also, any movie where the trailer can't even show one dynamic, compelling, or charismatic moment involving men in well-tailored suits is bound to be a failure. I'm sorry you had to watch this.

Or did you?

Did you just watch the trailer and then pay some kid matinee ticket price to brain you with a 2x4? It'd be ok if you did, really. One would assume it'd have the same effect only less degrading.

Posted by: Kayanne at August 27, 2010 3:30 PM

This is a great way to sum up a terrible film. How did this one get past the cutting room floor?! Meh, I don't even care really, they'll fund anything these days. Especially crap with crap rap stars. Why do they think rapping means they can act? Will Smith can barely act and that's how he got his start...geez...

Posted by: ph at August 27, 2010 3:33 PM

An action movie for people who don't much care for action movies.

Posted by: Fredo at August 27, 2010 3:39 PM

I can't believe you sat through this. Yet another movie showing us that there are Producers out there who have a true gift for cruelty!

Posted by: peanut at August 27, 2010 3:44 PM

Matt Dillon was in Armored and this? Wow.

That being said, was it better than Armored because I tried watching that movie three times and I kept falling asleep.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at August 27, 2010 3:51 PM

Hey look! It's Kayanne! I don't think I've seen your name go by in a while. HI KAYANNE!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 27, 2010 4:00 PM

Men, scratch that, Idris Elba in a well-tailored suit might be worth the price of admission.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at August 27, 2010 4:01 PM

I can proudly say that I had not even heard of this film before seeing the review.

Posted by: Craigilicious at August 27, 2010 4:03 PM

C'mon Rowles, this isn't a movie review. If you don't want to bother writing something, then just don't bother.

Posted by: superasente at August 27, 2010 4:05 PM

@superasente. It is all in the Title.

Posted by: peanut at August 27, 2010 4:24 PM

1. That hat is stupid looking.

2. None of those men in the photo are actually in the photo, right? The light's all coming from the wrong directions and they're all slightly different sizes and wrong distances from the camera and different amounts of focus. Was this the world's crappiest photoshop?

Posted by: BWeaves at August 27, 2010 4:39 PM

And if it's the world's worst photoshop, couldn't they have done something about Christensen's forehead?

Or is that the point?

1) If superasente comments, there is a 100% chance of him having to clarify later if he was being facetious.

Posted by: branded at August 27, 2010 5:07 PM

What the hell I thought this movie came out last year?

Posted by: annoyingmouse at August 27, 2010 5:08 PM

Dammit. I wanted this to be at least mediocre for Stringer's sake.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at August 27, 2010 5:29 PM

I think that it's actually T.I. who's in the film. My boyfriend, who is an R/B hip-hop fan, schooled me to remember that T.I. shaves his head and T. Pain has the amazing dreads.

My annoying fact-checking aside, neither would make me want to see the film...but hello, Idris Elba!

Posted by: bonnie at August 27, 2010 5:42 PM

Branded, I am going to tear out your eyes and taunt your brain with French insults until it melts. I swear to God. I'm going to rip the skull out of your face and beat you to death with it. I'm going to punch a hole in your chest with my forhead and gnaw my way out of your back using only my incisors. I am going to learn Kung-fu. Just to kill you with style.

Posted by: superasente at August 27, 2010 6:23 PM

Nah, I was just being facetious.

Posted by: superasente at August 27, 2010 6:24 PM

I thought at first I had seen this turkey but it was Armored that I saw with Matt Dillon. The whole time I was watching it I remember thinking "Didn't Matt Dillon used to be a good actor" and then I realized I had him confused with Matt Damon even though he doesn't look at all like Damon, but Damon has been in a few turkeys of his own lately and his career just might go the way of Dillon's career if Damon isn't careful. Well, I've put this turkey on my Netflix queue, along with Armored, so, there's that to look forward to during the long, cold winter.

Posted by: mslewis at August 27, 2010 6:31 PM

Dustin, this review is incomplete. So many questions it does not adequately address.

Takers. Like, undertaker "'Takers"?
So these guys all work at a mortuary, right?

With Pimp My Ride style caskets?

Does Vin Diesel make a cameo in this too?

Is there also a Latina love interest?

Or a has-been martial arts/action star?

What about a dude who always shoots his gun with a sideways grip?

How many bottles of Cristal are poored for a homeslice?

Does Walker NOx prematurely?

Where are all the bitches at, yo?

And, most importantly, what's up Tyrone?

Posted by: L.O.V.E. at August 27, 2010 7:34 PM

Ok msjulien, let's get this straight:

You didn't watch Armored with Matt Dillon?

But you did see it with Matt Damon, right?

Was Matt Damon pissed off when he realized you had him confused with Matt Dillon?

And certainly you didn't tell him about his recent poor choices, did you??

Dillon, Damon, I don't give a damn- if I'd paid for those movie tickets and snacks, you could just catch a cab home, you whiny little blind date..

don't tell me the poor schmuck took you to dinner, too?

Posted by: justin asshat at August 27, 2010 7:40 PM

any movie based off the Italian Job, only with more action and less talky-ness, will go better.

Posted by: lord ninja at August 28, 2010 12:20 AM

Ay carumba, there's so much math up there. I mean, 66.6%?

8) Not all white people look alike, but Hayden Christensen and Paul Walker do.

It's so true. And, they're both terrible actors. Yeah, yeah, Shattered Glass, STFU.

Posted by: MM at August 28, 2010 12:29 AM

Ugh.

Idris Elba.

Idris.

Elba.

A guy named after the last king of Libya and the island where Napoleon lived after his first abdication.

I'll pass.

Posted by: The Wanderer at August 28, 2010 4:35 AM

I'm just stunned that Chris Brown is able to get into a movie after admitting to beating Rihanna. How is he able to get work? What kind of person would hire him for film work? I wouldn't hire him to take out my garbage.

Idris better have a good excuse for working with the nasty little misogynist. For example, he was signed before Brown was. Aside from being so easy on the eyes, Idris is a high quality actor and it makes me sad to think he'd work with him on purpose.

Brown did some of his public service sentence where I live, and it involved yard work. He smiled and waved at fans (why?) and seemed to be having a fine time lazily picking up broken tree branches and strolling through an abandoned lot. He should have had to pick up dog shit and attend anger management.

Posted by: Viking at August 28, 2010 6:41 AM

A guy named after the last king of Libya and the island where Napoleon lived after his first abdication.
I'll pass.

Wow, if that was a joke, it should totally be on EE. Because I gotta admit, of all the reasons to not watch this movie, I would have never thought of THAT.

If not, I'm gonna back out slowly and call the nice man with the white coat that makes you hug yourself.

I'm just stunned that Chris Brown is able to get into a movie after admitting to beating Rihanna.

It will probably help to know that the movie was casted, filmed, and likely already completed by the time of the incident. Seeing as how they had trailers for it even back then, only for it to "mysteriously" not materialize until almost two years later.

Posted by: Vermillion at August 28, 2010 6:59 AM

13) T.I. is a terrible actor.

THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE. HE'S SOLD SO MANY RECORDS! IT'S IMPOSSIBLE.

Posted by: TSF at August 28, 2010 8:03 AM

16) Even if you are a terrible actor, and you die in this film, not to worry because you will still have a 99.9% chance to inflict further rotten performances upon the viewing public at a later date.

Posted by: bleujayone at August 28, 2010 8:50 AM

Mrs. Julien! Thanks for the welcome back. Sadly, work has actually been busy for me so I've barely had time to browse the site let alone comment.

Stupid job making me do stupid work.

Posted by: Kayanne at August 28, 2010 10:57 AM

You know, I turned down the movie yesterday...and now I'm regretting it only because I wanted to see Chris Brown die.

Please tell me that his movie death was either 1) exceedingly stupid, 2) exceedingly painful, or 3) both.

Ever watch a 5 year old run around thinking he's a crime fighter because he has a Batman costume on?

That's what this entire movie reminds me of.

Posted by: Thatguyphil at August 30, 2010 1:38 PM

Wow, a movie with Chris Brown, Paul Walker and Hayden Christensen? So much to hate!!!! I can't believe that this movie was held back several months after Chris Brown assaulted his exgirlfriend. Like that's the reason it's going to bomb.

Idris Elba - I understand that a man's gotta eat and maybe pickings are slim, but at least in Obsessed, you got down with Ali Larter and that other chick. This is a sausage fest with a bunch of people who would be understudies in a High School play.

I don't wear hats, because my head is just too damn big for them. But i know my limitations. Hayden Christensen looks like an Easter Island statue in a wannabe Rat Pack movie. Actually, I think the hat is probably a better actor and trying to leave his head, which is why it's so high up on Mt. Hayden.

Paul Walker is the badass according to the trailer I saw? He couldn't be the muscle in a Girl Scout troop.

Finally, back to Chris Brown. Sure, you can hold your own with a 100 pound chick and maybe win a fight on points, but if I ever see your bitch ass on the street, I'll beat you senseless. There is never a good reason to hit a woman, even if it's a Hilton or Gosselin like creature. And I damn sure won't go watch one of your movies or listen to your shitty music. Fuck you Chris Brown, you suck and your mom's a whore. You don't like that, come get some, I'll be happy to give you my address.

Posted by: Rubble44 at August 30, 2010 4:10 PM

3) If you are a rapper who has assaulted his girlfriend in real life, you will die in this film.

Chris Brown is not a rapper. He is a singer who assaulted his girlfriend.

Posted by: Ferrarini at August 30, 2010 11:18 PM

I'm so tired of white people still talking shit about Chris Brown. He was punished for what he did so move on! When crackers do anything it's always forgiven. His life should not end for one bad choice. He'll end up being a better person and others will think twice before abusing someone.

Posted by: Nita at August 31, 2010 10:59 AM

Nita, please shut the fuck up. PLEASE! Nobody cares about Chris Brown anymore, nobody wants anything to do with his music. His super-stardom is over. DONE. FINISHED. DEAD. His career is like what modern day mothers do to fun, take it out back and kill it.

I'm talking about, I am aware it was eventually my choice to read, however I essentially thought you'll have something useful to express. Most I hear is mostly a bunch of whining about something you might fix if you werent too busy looking for consideration.

This continues until they've been round the whole room. Everyone has a scorecard, with a list of names and ID numbers for the opposite sex. The women tick the men they'd like to see again, the men do the same, and when you get a match the organiser will send you an email the next day with the email addresses of your matches. With your safe contact details revealed, either of you are free to make the next move and suggest another, perhaps slightly longer, date.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
