Yes, Matt Damon Did Say that Gay Actors Should Remain Closeted, but No, It's Not What You Think

I just want to head this one off at the pass, because this particular headline (or a version of it) is beginning to trend online:

Some outlets are shortening that headline to simply this:

First off, what Matt Damon said wasn’t that controversial, Salon, and second, this is what Matt Damon actually told The Guardian, when asked if he thinks it’s more difficult for openly gay actors in the industry:

“I’m sure. When Ben and I first came on the scene there were rumours that we were gay because it was two guys who wrote a script together.”

Really?

“I know. It’s just like any piece of gossip… and it put us in a weird position of having to answer, you know what I mean? Which was then really deeply offensive. I don’t want to, like [imply] it’s some sort of disease - then it’s like I’m throwing my friends under the bus. But at the time, I remember thinking and saying, Rupert Everett was openly gay and this guy - more handsome than anybody, a classically trained actor - it’s tough to make the argument that he didn’t take a hit for being out.”

Fair. Everett did take a hit, for whatever reason. One day, he’s doing My Best Friend’s Wedding and being considered for the role of James Bond, and the next day he’s doing Inspector Gadget. Even Everett has admitted that coming out cost him his career and encouraged others not to come out.

But, Matt Damon didn’t really say that gay actors should remain in the closet. He said that ALL actors should keep their sexuality private.

“I think you’re a better actor the less people know about you period. And sexuality is a huge part of that. Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.”

Yes? No? Probably? Depends?

I will say that, when Gillian Anderson said that she was open to dating people of either gender, I immediately thought she was a better actress based on that statement, but that’s only because I’m a disgusting pig.
