Cannonball Read III: Here's the Situation: A Guide to Creeping on Chicks, Avoiding Grenades, and Getting in Your GTL on the Jersey Shore by Mike Sorentino with Chris Millis

In honor of spring break, I’m going with a beach/Florida theme this week. Here’s your second review in that theme.—TU

Mike Sorrentino, aka “The Situation”, made a name for himself…and sold the shit out of it. Using his nickname/catch phrase, he rode to the front of the “Jersey Shore” cast, being matched only by everyone’s “favorite” diminutive dimwit Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi. Not content with merely being on people’s TV screens, “Sitch” decided to “drop the knowledge” on the public in print form. With his assigned collaborator, he set out to create, “the Bible to the Situation Nation.” I, for one, can honestly say that if this is the Bible to an entire nation of people, I’m all for starting a good old fashioned crusade.

With only 133 pages to its name, one would assume that this would be a simple book to just walk right through. That assumption couldn’t be further from the truth, as it is the most painful 133 pages I’ve ever had to read. Catch phrases, shitty drawings, fake “ab facts,” and of course, “Real Life Situations,” all are yours for the perusing in this handy volume made for you to “crush.” By the end of this book, the only thing that was crushed was my soul, and that was because of the fact that somewhere, out in the major population sprawl of America, someone thought this was a good idea. Someone allowed this book to be written. Someone would have eventually bought it. Scariest of all, someone might actually take this at face value as the “Psychology” book it’s being categorized as. (Here’s hoping it’s properly reclassified as “Humor” in a couple of years.”)

Sorrentino’s writing comes off as a blend of pretentiousness and stupidity, making him out to be the biggest bonehead with narcissistic tendencies in quite some time. (The only competition he’d ever have is if Charlie Sheen writes his autobiography, “Winning.”) It occupies a rather inconvenient middle ground: it’s too stupid to laugh at, but it’s too funny to completely trash it. All you really need to take away from this book is one quote: “You can nail the GTL, and the GTL Remix, but you can’t fake being a class act.” Oh Sitch, you’ve proven yourself correctly, if only to your own detriment. I usually try to keep it classy around here, writing off only the books that deserve it. And this book deserves it. It’s misogynist, it’s repetitive, it’s the biggest monument to the “Cult of Me!” that most reality stars subscribe to. If you’ve asked me to get to the point, I’d sum my feelings up in three words: Fuck This Book.

I'm only asking this because it's mentioned twice but who or what is a GTL? I get that this is spring break so you are going with beach themes, but does that mean every day is going to be another treatise from the morons at Jersey Shore?

How about some Carl Hiaasen, his mystery books take place on Florida beaches. And they tend to be damn enjoyable and won't kill all your brain cells. Strip Tease, Tourist Season, and Skin Tight are all good ones to start with. I come to Pajiba to try and AVOID the spectre of garbage like Jersey Shore and it's "stars". Two reviews in two days on the books from two of those mouth-breathers is two too many.

These books are complete shit (and I've read Mein Kampf - in English - so I know from shit).

Carl Hiaasen has a great body of work that is well worth taking to the beach.

tyler... GTL is gym, tan, laundry... it's the "guido routine" before clubbing at night... holy fuck I hate myself for that... ellipses...

maka: Thanks for the explanation. I think. But really, laundry?!

Do you hate yourself, Doc? Why are you doing this? Do you hate us?

Also, does beach/Florida theme equate to Jersey Shore?

"Creeping ON chicks"? At my age it's pretty easy to creep OUT chicks, so I'm not impressed.

I vote to give Doctor Controversy two (2) Cannonball Read II credits for this one. Horrid.

It makes me sad that a lot of legitimately talented authors will struggle their whole lives to get a book published, and yet this shaved gorilla got a book deal for being the epitome of douchetastickness.

Sometimes, there just aren't enough ax-canes in the world.

If there is a nuclear meltdown and everything is gone. What would the civilization that comes after us think about us if this was the one book left unharmed? Would they model an entire society out of it, or god forbid a religion??

I'm coming out of lurking for this one little moment to clarify. By creating a book review for this thing and snooki's thing you have failed. Because you have given them credibility as books. They are not books. These things are the equivilant of a brain shit. Stop mentioning them because it only gives these idiots more power, influence, and credibility. Don't do that to all of us. Please, please I'm begging you, do not give these idiots one iota more credibility then mainstream media already gives them. They are choking the brain out of this country, and every time you mention them you help them just a little more.

The Situation was SO bad at Trump's roast last night. I felt bad for him, so many awkward silences after his 'jokes.'

From last night's roast

Lisa Lampanelli on The Situation: “I tried ordering your book on amazon.com. Amazon said customers who bought this book also bought a rope and a stool.”

WTF are those NJ street gangs doing ?? Crocheting? collecting stamps? Shoot this guinea douche-rocket already !!

"Dr. Controversy, what you've just read is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in the Situation's rambling, incoherent response was he even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having learned of its existence. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Great review, first one I've read here.

Seriously, who authorized this book? Does a cover image of this douche actually inspire people to pick this book up?

After reading the post for snooki's book I saw the other chick's book right next to it in the window of a book store I was walking into... and I dreaded the thought that her relationship guide would be the next cannonball read critique, and now I assume it was only preempted for this one. I would ask how much suffering you have to do for us mortals born with sin, but I assume after your week of reading the assorted Jersey Shore... literature, you will be crucified... maybe you can follow this up with whatshername from the hills teen fiction series. I'll give you a hint at its awesomnimity, when interviewed for book catalog as a new author, when asked who her favorite literary character was she described the main character from her series. Why? Because she identifies with her... really?

I worked for a bookstore and killed time one day flipping through this publication while stuck at the checkout area and stumbled upon this interview and laughed for a long while over it.

Moment of Win: One of my local Barnes & Noble stores DID file this under fiction.

(And before anyone asks, yes I have JWoww's book to finish my Crucifiction Trilogy. What can I say? I read too many decent books that I needed some really crap ones to make a splash & rant about. It can't all be sunshine and kitten poots.)
