If you thought the Mandarin twist of Iron Man 3 was the only surprise that Shane Black and team had in store for you, think again, In a recent interview with Uproxx, Black revealed that in the original script, the role that Guy Pierce’s Killian played would have mostly been filled by Rebecca Hall’s Maya Hansen. Prior to filming though, notes came back from Marvel that the villain needed to be a man.

As Black is quick to point out in the interview, this decision came from Marvel Corporate during the 2013 movie’s production process, and not from studio boss Kevin Feige, who Black says is “the guy who gets it right. As of last fall, Feige and Marvel Studios have moved completely under the umbrella of Disney, giving them a much higher degree of autonomy from Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter who frankly feels like a cartoonishly ludicrous example of a tightwad conservative. Under Feige’s new totalitarian rule we’ve already seen the expansion of Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp take on a headlining spot in the Ant-Man sequel, and serious consideration of Black Widow as a character who can carry her own franchise.

Still, it’s hard to judge Marvel for this gender-based decision, after all, who doesn’t have an Aldrich Killian toy sitting on their shelf.
