Another one is out at Lucasfilm. The Star Wars universe hasn’t had great luck with its directors since its revival at Disney, but this one is still something of a shock. We joked about it but we weren’t sure it would ever actually happen, but it’s true, Colin Trevorrow is no now longer directing the 9th Star Wars movie. In a statement from Lucasfilm, it was revealed that good old ‘creative differences’ got in the way again:

‘Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon.’

Right now, Lucasfilm is basically the living embodiment of the ‘This is fine’ gif, following the mess going on at Han Solo HQ. This won’t help matters but it’s clear Kathleen Kennedy runs a tight ship and wanted to get this drama out of the way before filming even started. Probably a smart move. Frankly, it’s a cleaner break for Trevorrow too. Who wants to get caught up in that mess? Let the porgs clean it up.

Now we must wait to find out who will replace Trevorrow. The chances are Kennedy and Lucasfilm will want to stick with a solid, robust, workmanlike director, one with experience who knows the restrictions of the studio system and won’t try to auteur up the place. They may throw more money at Rian Johnson or see if Tony Gilroy’s available. Perhaps they’ll look outside their own roster and see what’s going on at Disney or Marvel - maybe Ava DuVernay?

Who would you like to see direct the 9th film? How much do you think Kathleen Kennedy Irished up her coffee this morning? Where would The Book of Henry fit into the Star Wars universe? Answers below.
