With Christmas completed, adorable celebrity couple Chrissy Teigen and John Legend readied for New Years by taking a trip to Tokyo. Well, trying to. See, they hit a snag 4 hours into the 11-hour flight out of Los Angeles. Naturally, Teigen tweeted updates throughout the travel nightmare. And though this would bring most of us to our knees lamenting the soul-crushing enigmas of airline rules, she remained cool as a spring breeze.
a flying first for me: 4 hours into an 11 hour flight and we are turning around because we have a passenger who isn’t supposed to be on this plane. Why…why do we all gotta go back, I do not know
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
So many questions and I have no answers. Either do they. This person must be mortified though
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
.@chrissyteigen is on an international flight that turned around 4 hours in because a passenger isn’t supposed to be on plane. Look at this flight path! This is my Twilight Zone. pic.twitter.com/II06VmfOah

— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
Lmao after all this I will have spent 8 hours on a flight to nowhere. Like we were all just havin a great time up here flyin in the sky watching gran torino time to go home now
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
This person is so lucky that we will all have to deplane. Imagine having to walk off alone. The shame!
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
I don’t know why I’m not more upset about this. The pleasure I get out of the story is worth more to me than a direct flight to Tokyo
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
I won’t be able to sleep until I know how this person figured out they were on the wrong flight. That’s all I ask. 150 people have been majorly inconvenienced, please, just tell me
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
Why did we all get punished for this one person’s mistake? Why not just land in Tokyo and send the other person back? How is this the better idea, you ask? We all have the same questions.
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) December 27, 2017
They keep saying the person had a United ticket. We are on ANA. So basically the boarding pass scanner is just a beedoop machine that makes beedoop noises that register to nowhere

LAX —> LAX flight complete. Flight time, 8 hours and 20 minutes.

So, Teigen and Legend got no answers, and neither has the press. CBS reports that All Nippon Airways issued a statement which reads in part:
During the flight, the cabin crew became aware that one of the passengers boarded the incorrect flight and notified the pilot. As part of the airline’s security procedure, the pilot in command decided to return to the originating airport, where the passenger was disembarked.ANA is researching the situation currently to determine how the passenger boarded the flight. ANA would like to express its apologies to the passengers for the inconvenience. We take great pride providing exemplary customer service, and on this flight we failed to do so.
An FBI investigation to the matter is ongoing, though no arrests have been made, nor charges filed as of yet.
So how did a person board the wrong flight with the wrong airline and not notice? Who was this perplexing person who somehow managed to miss all the signage and flight info even as they boarded? How did no one at ANA notice the boarding pass was clearly not correct? Why did that utterly bizarre mistake force 150 other people’s travel plans to be derailed? Why was ramen handed out? What flavor was it?
We may never know. But please feel free to wildly speculate in comments.
