Shia LaBeouf started his career promising enough, with small parts in movies and television before landing the titular role of Even Stevens on Disney Channel in 2000. A few movies under his belt and then on to the lead role in the first Transformers trilogy and LaBeouf seemed to be making a name as a box office draw. Then came an arrest in 2005 that started to make people aware that the one-time child star had a problem with anger and addiction.

Since that first arrest, LaBeouf has been arrested several more times, worn a paper bag on his head with, “I am not famous anymore” written on it, stolen performance art from other artists, watched his entire film oeuvre while a camera captured his reactions, and moved from blockbuster turd to indies. Now? Well, now there’s a movie loosely based on his life with Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges portraying LaBeouf.

LaBeouf, all of 31 and not too haggard to play his younger self, intends to instead play his father. It’s interesting to say the least, especially given the film’s subject matter.

Honey Boy, which was LaBeouf’s childhood nickname, follows a former child star and actor Otis Lort (Hedges) attempting to reconcile with his alcoholic father James (LaBeouf) over the course of a decade. I don’t know if this movie will be a trash fire or not, but something tells me LaBeouf needs the catharsis more than he needs a hit.

This all comes on the heels of an interview LaBeouf did with Esquire hitting the internet a few days ago and a run-up to the actor’s portrayal of tennis legend and notorious asshole John McEnroe in April 13th’s Borg vs. McEnroe. Hopefully, LaBeouf is getting himself clean and controlled before he’s arrested and filmed being a drunken racist again.

Alma Har’el (Bombay Beach) will direct the Honey Boy, re-teaming with LaBeouf after directing him in a music video she for Sigur Rós. LaBeouf penned the script while in rehab, landing a mention on The Black List.
