Oh Yeah Baby, It’s On!

(Publisher’s Note: With Cannonball Read III kicking off in two weeks, I thought we’d repost this, as a reminder for those of you considering joining. Details on CBR III are below.)

For those of you obsessives (like me) who have been paying attention and thinking, “Hey, didn’t Cannonball Read II start in November last year? Shouldn’t Cannonball Read III be starting, say, last Monday?” The answer is yes and no. The good news is that there will be a CBR-III! Yay! And well, there isn’t any bad news. For ease of tracking the beginning and end of CBR-III, it won’t officially start until January 1, 2011. So, start gathering your reading lists.

This means you have two months to cheat, I mean, get a head start, if you want. Yeah, you heard me correctly. I honestly don’t care if you start reading two whole months early. Want to know why? Because what I love most about the Cannonball Read are its two basic premises: A) it encourages people to read more and, B) it honors our beloved AlabamaPink. So, if you want to go ahead and start reading now, as far as I’m concerned, you are accomplishing both of those ideals, and therefore, have my blessing. Additionally, if starting a couple of months early means that a few more folks get to 52 books, I’m totally willing to offer up more of Dustin’s money for Lil A’s college fund. I’m generous like that.

OK, I want to take a second to speak to those of you who were all raring to go last year, and perhaps even started CBR-II with a bang, but then, well, life got in the way, and perhaps you felt a bit discouraged, maybe even a little bit guilty. Yeah, I’m right there with you. But you know what? New year, new Cannonball Read! That’s right, hope springs eternal! You can do it! Also, if you read the next bit, you’ll see I’m making some changes that may further encourage you to try again.

As with last year, we’re taking some of the pressure off. I encourage any and all of you who want to go for the full 52 books in one year, to go for it! Hats off to you kind ladies and gentlemen. For those of you who complete the full Cannonball, a donation will be made to Lil A’s college fund. At the same time, I recognize that not all of us can read a book a week and write a review to boot. So, I’m offering up some other options. Perhaps you feel up to a Half Cannonball—twenty-six books in a year—which comes out to just two books a month, plus a couple extra? Or you think a Quarter Cannonball—thirteen books in a year—just one a month, plus one more for good measure, is more your speed? Well I say, join us! The more the merrier. Remember what I said about more reading and honoring Miss Pink.

If you are interested in participating, email me. Give me your Pajibidentity and your blog address. (Yes, you will have to have a blog.) We’ll have a list somewhere on the site of all the participants and a link to their blogs. If you know ahead of time the commitment you are going to make, Whole Cannonball, Half Cannonball, or Quarter Cannonball, let me know that too. As was the case last year, I’d like a review for each book you’ve read, both to establish that you did, indeed, read it, but also to provide reviews to go up on Pajiba.* I definitely added to my CBR-II reading list last year based on the great CBR reviews I read, and I’m guessing I’m not alone. And who doesn’t love to get a good book recommendation? Reviews should be three to four paragraphs, and can be longer of course. Speaking of CBR reviews on Pajiba, expect them to be a little less frequent than last year—probably one to two a week, depending on how many come my way.

All righty then, people. I do believe you have the info you need. Now get to reading! Or, you know, wait until the official start date of January 1, 2011.

*There may be some flexibility on the review requirement. If that’s your sticking point, email me and let’s see if we can work something out. I want as many folks joining in on the fun as possible.

I read at least a few books a month, but I don't participate in the CBR because I don't have one of these new-fangled "blogs" I keep hearing about. I do love the reviews from Pajiba, though. I have added many books to my to-read list after seeing them here, so please keep 'em comin'!

I did CB II. I kept waiting to see an entry about how it ended, how many people did it, the contributions to little A's college fund, but I think I missed it.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at November 9, 2010 2:31 PM

HAHAHA NEVERMIND. There it is. Disregard my previous comment. Just call me "Snuggiepants the Impatient."

Posted by: Snuggiepants at November 9, 2010 2:32 PM

Flexibility on the reviews, eh? The possible incineration of my Cannonball Read kryptonite? This requires mulling over.

Or not. Cause I know even if it comes down to writing a one paragraph book report, I'll somehow find a way to twist it in my head that OMG everyone hates me because I didn't write it fast enough and oh Godtopus I'm back eight books and haven't written a word on any and yup everyone hates me now and and and ::head explosion::

So, good luck to the next crop of participants who won't have panic attacks over a fun web-based reading game. I'll stick to my bizarre 5+ books at once reading schedule and the occasional "I rather fancied that one" review of a book people stopped caring about years ago.

Posted by: Robert at November 9, 2010 2:32 PM

I got started in CBR II because I really was reading a book a week on my regular commutes, if not more.

Then I got the bright idea to enroll in school again.

So then - two books/reviews done for CBRII. Since I'm not finished school yet, I will pass on III and look forward to participating in CBRIV.

Best of luck to you all.

OK, I want to take a second to speak to those of you who were all raring to go last year, and perhaps even started CBR-II with a bang, but then, well, life got in the way, and perhaps you felt a bit discouraged, maybe even a little bit guilty. Yeah

that's me...

Posted by: denesteak at November 9, 2010 2:41 PM

I've never participated before but I think I will this (upcoming) year. I read a lot--I've read something like 150 books this year, and it isn't over yet, and I've been reviewing most of those titles.

Of course, now that I'm all like, "Oh look at how much I read," this year will probably be terrible. I'm starting grad school in the winter and maybe I'll have a real job by then, too. But I'm gonna try this anyway!

Posted by: Clementine Bojangles at November 9, 2010 2:42 PM

This Cannonball Read has been piquing my interest for a while now so I'm going to give it a go, though I can only commit to the Quarter Cannonball, given that I have two kids under the age of five and a full-time job.

Time to get a blog set up. . .

Posted by: prairiegirl at November 9, 2010 2:46 PM

I'm in!

Posted by: Sara H at November 9, 2010 3:04 PM

If we commit to a Fractional Cannonball, can we later move up to the whole shebang if life stops getting in the way*?

*the likelihood is slim, but were it not for self-delusion, I'd never get anything done.

Posted by: leuce7 at November 9, 2010 3:05 PM

I think I'd like to push myself this year. I read a lot, but I am the type to simply read again the books I adore. Two years or so ago I started acquiring a stack of books I wanted to read in order to branch out, but I didn't get far. Maybe I should dust it off in the name of good deeds and brain food...

Posted by: Patty O'Green at November 9, 2010 3:09 PM

Oof, I have to set up a blog? Bah! I suppose I can do this. When I lived in the Bronx, I had a branch of the NY Public Library half a block from my apartment - I burned through 5 books a week easy with that access and subway commuting. These days, I don't push through my lit nearly as quickly - full time job, doing shows in the evenings, blah blah blah. But I really want to try this this year. So...I guess I'm in? I'm gonna commit to a Quarter Cannonball, that way I get a chance to get my feet wet with all this. I'll email you once I get a blog set up somewhere!

Posted by: KatSings at November 9, 2010 3:23 PM

Suggestion -- a blog where people without blogs can submit reviews to be collectively published.

Posted by: Caroline at November 9, 2010 3:23 PM

Caroline - you could set up a blog just for CBR. You don't have to write anything else on it.

Posted by: mswas at November 9, 2010 3:29 PM

I have a blog, it's not an issue for me.

I'm saying for those who don't want to do that, and will basically only use the blog they set up to publish the reviews and never again or for anything else, it makes more sense to have one silo for the reviews to go in.

In fact, I'd be willing to manage such a thing.

Posted by: Caroline at November 9, 2010 3:36 PM

Double in fact . . .

I would really seriously love to be the one who tracks the number of reviews everyone's done. If that's not already a task someone feels attached to.

Posted by: Caroline at November 9, 2010 3:46 PM

I absolutely love the idea of Cannonball Read but I have one kind of big issue. It’s not the reading part but the writing. Irony of ironies, I read like a maniac but my writing skills blow – totally, absolutely blow. Maybe I will try it and see if my skills improve. :)

Posted by: bionic woman at November 9, 2010 3:47 PM

So do I have to do the whole e-mail thing if everything is out in the open?

I'm going for it again...

Posted by: DeistBrawler at November 9, 2010 3:57 PM

So I said I was going to start my blog to do CBR II, but I didn't. I still managed to read 45+ books last year.

So now I have time to totally get my blog up and participate this year.

Posted by: DoubleH at November 9, 2010 4:11 PM

I'm definitely going to give it a go this year - especially with 2 extra months. Although I'm convinced I'll read next to nothing during the school year, and make it all up during the summer, as usual.

My blog is at wordpress, dsbs42. I'm not in a place where I can check right now, but I think the URL is dsbs42.wordpress.com.

Posted by: dsbs at November 9, 2010 4:18 PM

i kinda like caroline's idea.....

it would make posting reviews easier, and might make it more convenient to read other reviews as well....

Posted by: kella at November 9, 2010 4:20 PM

Question: What constitutes a book? Because I really really want to do this, but could only participate if I could exclusively review Shakespeare, Modern American plays, and Supreme Court decisions. Probably not, huh?

Posted by: esme at November 9, 2010 4:29 PM

I'm in again! And I'm definitely down for the Half Cannonball, since that's what I ended up doing this year anyway. At least this time around I won't have wedding plans getting in the way of my reading time!

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at November 9, 2010 4:30 PM

I'm definitely in. I'd like to try for 100 again.

Posted by: figgy at November 9, 2010 4:34 PM

I am also very interested in Caroline's idea. I eadily read more than 52 books a year and what stopped me from participating last year was the whole blog thing. I know, I can set up a blog...I still didn't. So if I could just send an email and have the added pressure of Caroline actually counting them and maybe even sending mails reminding me to send one I would defintely be down for the whole thing!

Posted by: Phedre at November 9, 2010 4:48 PM

I came second this year, and that felt damn good, so I will absolutely be doing it again for Cannonball III. I was already planning on keeping track of my books of 2011 anyway, having the next Cannonball read starting in January, it just kills two birds with one stone.

Posted by: MalinE at November 9, 2010 4:48 PM

If you're worried about the writing, buck up and do it. You don't have to rock the world with original analysis, just write what you did and did not like about the book. I signed up for CBRII to make myself write. Reading my earliest reviews and my latest I see a tremendous improvement.

Posted by: FyreHaar at November 9, 2010 5:09 PM

I'm in.

Posted by: Jim Doggie at November 9, 2010 5:19 PM

Fuckit. I'm in, too.
Hopefully this time I won't be so disorganised that I end up reviewing 14 books in the last weekend. (Who'd have thought that all those years of exam cramming would come in handy again?)

Posted by: ScienceGeek at November 9, 2010 5:51 PM

Damn it. I'm really interested in this but I'll have to wait a little while and see if life calms down any first.

Posted by: Paultera at November 9, 2010 5:56 PM

I'll admit, that first review is a bit daunting. But you get the hang of it, and no one's grading you. Best thing is, you get to turn people on to books you like, and warn them away from the drivel.

(Yes, Four Corners of the Sky, I am still looking at you, you piece of crap!)

Posted by: mswas at November 9, 2010 6:17 PM

I'm in. I've just started writing about a few books that I've read recently on my blog, so this should really get me going. And give me something to blog about when I'm stuck, too.

Posted by: xoxoxoe at November 9, 2010 6:56 PM

I'm going to waffle on this for a while, it seems. I'm remembering the joy I had in eviscerating Stephen King's Blaze and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Bad books and books I just plain don't like are so inspiring to me. I should easily be able to find 52 books that make me get all stabby and get through this (how many fiction books has King written, anyway? oh good, well over 52. I'll cut them with Twilight, bad sequels to good novels, and erotic zombie fiction and be good to go). If I find a book I love, it takes me forever to write about it. I want to read it again and again until I figure out why I love it.

52 bad books to review in a year. Maybe I could. Or maybe I get another bad case of the crazies and freak out over opening the blog for months at a time because of the pressure. Won't know unless I try, right?

Posted by: Robert at November 9, 2010 7:12 PM

Do it Robert. I will totally read your stabby reviews. Start with Under the Dome.

Also, shit. I just got Dracula to read.

Posted by: Carrie/Teabelly at November 9, 2010 7:22 PM

Cannonballahs,

Query: Do you still ingest other forms of media? I am trying to decide to what I may commit and I want to know if movies, music, games, the theatre, comics, statuary, and architecture are going to get rocked right out?

(I may not be actively into all of the above.)

Posted by: coryo at November 9, 2010 7:55 PM

I read most of mine on my hour and a half commute every day, leaving rest of my time free for other stuff, unless a book was particularly engrossing. Cannonball didn't take over my life or anything.

Posted by: Carrie/Teabelly at November 9, 2010 7:58 PM

I finally graduate from grad school in December, so I think I'll actually participate this year. Yay!

Posted by: Nat Kittyface at November 9, 2010 8:15 PM

Yay! The emails are pouring in from participants! I'll answer many (all?) of the questions posed here later (probably not until Thursday), but there was one issue I wanted to clear up pronto.

I have no plans to limit the number of participants in CBR-III. So, as long as you let me know by January 1st that you want in, you're in!

Keep your emails coming!

Posted by: tamatha at November 9, 2010 9:38 PM

PS That does not mean, however, that you should wait until the last minute to tell me. If you know you want in, let me know sooner rather than later.

Thanks!

Posted by: tamatha at November 9, 2010 9:39 PM

I am in if Caroline's idea is a go...

Posted by: llp at November 9, 2010 9:41 PM

I cam so close with CBR 2 I have to go for it again. My boyfriend will not be thrilled since he thought it was all over, but it ain't over till I win! I am glad we have until Jan, I am going to read and review my last 11 books left over from 2 then I will be ready to keep it up and I am gonna kill it with round 3!

Posted by: Alli at November 9, 2010 10:03 PM

Re: Caroline's idea

So, is it being suggested that Caroline will set up a compendium blog for CBR:III where she will post any/all reviews that are emailed to her? (Not just a home for the blogless)

Because that would be awesome. Having one place to go to for book reviews without having to worry about RSS Readers or periodically checking in on a few dozen blogs only to find that several haven't been updated in forever...

But I might O.D. on book recommendations.

Posted by: Yossarian at November 9, 2010 10:33 PM

Um. This is a bit of a cheerocracy people. No decisions have been made yet re: Caroline's suggestion. I am still mulling. I am a muller. I'll let you know when it's all mulled out. I just volunteered for this gig recently, so I'm still working out the details.

Posted by: tamatha at November 9, 2010 10:52 PM

I would be happy to do or not do whatever.

As a Cannonballer I found it confusing and frustrating to try to find everyone's reviews, and I would have liked to see things like: If multiple people reviewed the same book! A review could even include links to other people's prior reviews of the book if there were. The possibilities are pretty vast, and I think having something at least a little more interactive would drum up more interest.

Posted by: Caroline at November 9, 2010 11:27 PM

So I'm kinda new around here, at least in the posting department (I've been following the site for years), and I'm pretty damn excited about this. I don't have a crazy long commute during which to read, nor do I actually have a lot of free time. But I have been looking for the motivation to stop watching tv and start reading more books in what little free time i have.
One pressing question that I have is do these have to be books one has never before read? I was an English major in college, and found a lot of so-called favorite books that I reread every so often. If anyone (head cheerleader or otherwise) has all the answers for me, I would love that. Also, if you know the meaning of life, that would be greatly appreciated, too.

Posted by: KittyCat at November 9, 2010 11:32 PM

I'm going to be participating in the full CBIII! Count this reader IN.

Posted by: Krista at November 9, 2010 11:53 PM

I'm so there! And rock on, tamz -- Fuscia's shoes are big ones to fill, but I know you'll do a great job.

Posted by: Jelinas at November 10, 2010 12:44 AM

How refreshing this day – I've got new informations here. Love this blog.

Posted by: Nikmaya J at November 10, 2010 1:53 AM

KittyCat: I read books I'd already read, because I like returning to old faves too. I think as long as it was a reasonably sized book anything was fine.

Posted by: Carrie/Teabelly at November 10, 2010 2:49 AM

Ooooh, what about lengthy graphic novel compendiums? I'm game for CBR3 regardless, but I think it might be fun to get some visual reading material mixed in.

Posted by: dagon at November 10, 2010 6:50 AM

Whatever flavor you want to put on in, I'm in. I need the challenge, to make the time to read. Yeah we all have busy lives - work, kids, wife, husbands, whatever. But if you are watching more that an hour of tv a night, you have time to turn that idiot box off and pick up a book!

You can follow my reviews, or not, at Stunned B'y!

Posted by: Penniless Bastard at November 10, 2010 7:13 AM

How do people read 100 books in a year?

The reason I ask is I'm a fast reader. I mean, a FAST reader. I read so fast, people accuse me of NOT having read something, so then they feel they have to quiz me and find out I did read it. So, you know, I'm fast, especially when I want to be/need to be (depends on the material, of course, some things simply can't be read quickly).

So how does one read 100 books or more in a year? Is it a part-time job? Are they short books? Easy books? You're just super consistent on the time you spend reading each day/week?

I have a full-time job, a teenager, a husband, I try to work out every now and then and I hang out with my friends from time to time, in addition to taking care of the house, cooking, etc. I guess I could scale back on the old TV watching. (Facebook is included in the hanging out with friends part--y'all didn't know I carry you around in my pocket, did you?)

Plus my problem is I get onto a reading kick, and then I find myself burned out for a while. I'm not consistent.

As far as writing reviews go, the advice above is good. JUST WRITE THEM. They don't have to be award-winning or super insightful. (I don't, however, enjoy reviews that are just plot summaries.) They don't even have to be super long. Just weigh in--what was it about and what did you think? Would you recommend it?

And that's it. Don't let the writing part get you down. I wrote some reviews (single draft, mind you, but now I'm just bragging) that I thought were really good and I had quite a few in which I seemed to be just phoning it in. That's ok. I'm not a professional writer; I might not sparkle each time. In fact, I probably won't.

And now I just talked myself into probably doing CBR III.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at November 10, 2010 9:52 AM

dagon I did a review of a few graphic novels. I felt like it was cheating to do one review per novel, since it took me all of an hour to read each book, so I combined them (they were in a series, anyway, if I'm remembering correctly) into one review.

Keep in mind that's just my opinion and what I decided to do. I'm not speaking for the Cannonball Gods or any sort of official rules.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at November 10, 2010 9:54 AM

KittyCat I think the spirit of the thing was to read books you had never read.

However, I was an English major, too, and I found a couple of books I *thought* I read or thought I finished and discovered I had not. They were those books I gave up on or faked my way through. I did include a couple of those in CBII because I really DID read them/finish them this time (and in the finishing case, I started over from the beginning, obviously).

I tried to keep that to a minimum, though, because I sort of felt like it was cheating AND I wanted to discover some new books. Hope that made sense.

By the way, I always thought I finished reading The Handmaid's Tale way back when. Apparently I got up to chapter four and had stopped! My bookmark is still there, and I even wrote June 1988 on it. What the what? So now I started over and am finishing it. It's like a different book to me--I was 17 back then and am nearly 40 now.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at November 10, 2010 9:58 AM

do these have to be books one has never before read?

I think the only rules were that they had to be more than 150 pages. Rereading a book could make for an interesting review where you point out aspects you hadn't considered the first time around.

How do people read 100 books in a year?

I squeeze in reading whenever I can. I read during lunch at work, and this bookrack from Amazon makes for great, hands-free reading.

Also, if you know the meaning of life, that would be greatly appreciated, too.

Per Douglas Adams, the answer to that question is 42.

Posted by: mswas at November 10, 2010 10:35 AM

Godtopus, I love y'all's enthusiasm for CBR!

I still have plans to answer most of your questions when I finally have a chance to breathe tomorrow (thank you veterans for the day off, and for serving your country), so please check back here. A quick note about what is acceptable. The original CBR had the following stipulations:

No books smaller than 200 pages. Short story collections only count if they are at least 6 stories long. No graphic novels.

That being said, I'm clearly willing to be a bit flexible--within reason. I read (well not all the way through, because I decided I couldn't deal with any more sad little, weird little stories) a short story collection last year that did have more than 6 stories but was less than 200 pages. And I felt like it met the requirements.

As for rereading something you've already read, that's a bit of a sticky wicket. I agree with Snuggie that the implied intention was to read new things. That being said, especially if it's something you haven't read in awhile, I don't think it's verboten. And a second read can definitely give one new insights, which could be very helpful in writing up a review.

So, what I'm saying is that there is flexibility and you need to see how it aligns with your moral compass. When in doubt, we'll use my moral compass.

Posted by: tamatha at November 10, 2010 12:20 PM

Squeee! As a CBI participant in 2009, I took a break from reading lots this year. I still read, of course - duh, books are like AIR to me, I need them to live. So I am raring to go with a reduced 52-books-in-a-year requirement... 'cause I only read 94 the year we supposed to read 100.

Just a couple cents about the "reading things you've read before" deal: I set a rule for myself that if I'd only read it once before, I could read it again and count it. Worked fine for me.

Posted by: naivehelga at November 10, 2010 1:02 PM

I don't think anyone should get too hung up on what is/ is not a book. tamatha (and Nicole before her) seem pretty flexible on the requirements. The whole point of the thing is to challenge yourself and promote reading. If you race through four dozen Hardy Boys Mysteries just to impress people on the internet and win a free miniature pizza you've missed the point. But if you read a few 400 and 500 page beasts and you want to balance that out with A Christmas Carrol, or Bartleby, the Scrivener or even a short David Sedaris collection like Holidays On Ice I don't think anyone should have a problem with it. Have fun and enjoy reading!

And I happen to think that re-reading a book you've read before is probably more valuable than reading something new, and usually makes for a higher quality of review. If the book was good enough to make you want to read it again (and you actually intend to read it, not skim it) why on Earth would that be a bad thing?

Read, baby, read! Find something interesting to read and tell us about it. If esme actually does start reviewing modern American plays and Supreme Court decision I'm all for it. I'd follow that blog in a heartbeat. I wish more people would read graphic novels for Cannonball, because I hate they way they are marginalized. I wold hope you balance that out with some more ambitious selections or maybe consider Snuggie's 'partial credit' idea, but who am I to judge?

(Note: tamatha actually is someone to judge, and these unsolicited comments are just my opinion, so take them for what they're worth)

Posted by: Yossarian at November 10, 2010 3:36 PM

Oh yeah, and don't let Cannonball Read make you feel like you have to finish a crappy book that you aren't enjoying just to get credit for it. Life is to short for crappy books. Throw them against the wall and start a new one before they stop quivering on the floor. I guarantee you will be more productive reading books you love anyway.

Posted by: Yossarian at November 10, 2010 3:38 PM

I'm psyched that so many people are still excited about this. I mean, I would be reading anyway (I spend 3 hours a day commuting via bus/train) but I probably wouldn't push myself to blog if it weren't for Cannonball Read. Besides, it's nice to feel like you're a part of something. Thanks, Tamatha, for taking the helm!

Posted by: Siege at November 10, 2010 4:29 PM

Oh I would totally read reviews of Supreme Court decisions. So: YES, PLEASE.

But that is just my opinion.

Posted by: Snuggiepants at November 10, 2010 6:33 PM

I'm back in. I actually did read 52+ books for CBII, but totally slacked on the reviews. I had planned on finishing up all the reviews anyway, and then continuing on reviewing everything I read, just for poops & giggles. Now I can do it for poops, giggles, and CBIII!

Posted by: Captain Tuttle at November 10, 2010 9:37 PM

Hmmm, I am currently working a full time job, a part-time job and studying on-line for a certificate, but this seems too fun to pass up! I'd totally be into this if Caroline's idea gets the go ahead.

I can't believe that I'm seriously considering a Half Cannonball -- while simultaneously being a f/t nursing student, getting married in March, and raising a toddler!

But I was planning to do a bunch of reading starting mid-December during winter break which would give me a bit of a head start. And I love a good challenge!

Love the PS however I would hope that both the following iterations of Playstation would see either the next capacity drive (holographic?) or a solid state delivery mechanism that can expand in capability indefinitely without the requirement to update hardware.

Hello Everyone!

OK, I'm finally getting a chance to address various questions/issues raised in the comment thread, so here goes:

pixalated - As someone who was blog-phobic last year, I can relate to having some hesitation because you don't have one, but really, they are so easy to set up. Honestly, if I can do it, you can too. I use Blogger. Others are fond of Wordpress. Both are super simple to start a blog on. And what I found out, was that after awhile, I found other things to blog about and I was happy to have a blog. So, I really encourage you to start up a CBR blog. It's painless!

leuce7 - Yes, absolutely, you can change your level of Cannonballing as you go. Just let me know.

Caroline's suggestion - I'm gonna address this at the end.

bionic woman - I'm going to second what others have already said. The way to get better at writing is simply to write. It may sound trite, but it's true. As you can see, we're really not interested in judging. What I'm interested in, is having as many folks participating who are so inclined. So, take the plunge!

Yes, Deist, since I specifically requested that folks email me, it means I want you to email me. I have some tracking and organizing to do, and it'll be much easier if I have everyone's contact info, etc. in one place.

esme - Folks seem to like your plays and Supreme Court Decision review idea, and who am I to squash a unique approach? Review away!

Paultera - As I mentioned above, you have some time to decide--until January 1st. And I hope your life settles down enough for you to join us!

KittyCat - I think we've established that rereading is, indeed, acceptable. Especially if you mix up old with new.

dagon - a "lengthy graphic novel compendium" should be fine, especially as part of a mix of reading material.

OK, and now for the issue of a CBR-III blog. I see pros and cons (mostly pros) and I ran the idea past our illustrious leader, and he gave it the thumbs up. So, yes, this means that we will have one.

Although I continue to encourage those of you who are blogless to start one (you just never know where it might lead!), you will be able to simply submit your reviews to the group blog, if you so desire.

Caroline, I sincerely appreciate your offer to set this up, thank you; however, I'm going to go ahead and give it a whirl. If, for some reason, I decide it's too much for me, I'll take you up on your offer in a heartbeat. Thanks for the fabulous suggestion.

So, here is how it will work. All of you who want to be part of the blog will let me know, BUT NOT YET. I'll email you when that part is ready. And I'll give you the info you need to be able to post.

Each person will be responsible for posting their own reviews. If you just want to post a link to the review you posted on your own blog, that's totally fine.

YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO JOIN THE GROUP BLOG. It is a purely voluntary thing.

What I like about this idea are the same things that some of you have already mentioned, namely that it can be a one-stop place to see what everyone has read. And I like the idea that it has great potential as a way of fostering community among Cannonballers.

I do have two concerns. The first is that those of us who are less prolific readers/reviewers may become a bit discouraged when we see that other Cannonballers are on their 25th review, and we're just reading our 4th book. My other concern is that folks who may feel a little less than confident in their writing skills or reviews may feel intimidated.

So, in response to those concerns I have a couple things to say. First, remember the basic ideals of the Cannonball Read: to read more and to honor AlabamaPink. So however much reading and reviewing you're able to get to, you're doing good. Consider yourself supported. Second, everyone has to start somewhere. Don't compare yourself to others, just get your thoughts down! And the more you write, the better you should get. Also, if you want to keep your posts on just your blog, that is totally fine (though I do hope you'll trust us and post to the group blog, too).

A quick note about posting reviews, in general, (on your own blog and/or the group one): Make sure you number your review, so it's easy for me to know where you are in the CBR. And, when posting on your own blog, make sure you tag all reviews so it's obvious that that post is a review for CBR-III.

OK. I think that's it for now. Again, I'm really, super happy that so many of you are excited for Cannonball Read III!

It's a functional idea, I like it.

I gotta have a blog?! Do I look like I'm made of money, handsome and possess a vocabulary that would make the most erudite of professors defecate amidst their pantaloons?

Posted by: Fredo at December 16, 2010 1:09 PM

Um, Fredo, blogs are free. Check out Blogger.com and Wordpress.com. Also, see the long comment I wrote (two above yours) where you could actually get out of the blog requirement, should you so desire.

I just read A Christmas Carol at lunch so I'm going to count it. I have no hope of hitting 52 but I came damn close to hitting 26 last year (I stopped reviewing after about 14)so I guess I'm in again.

Posted by: TylerDFC at December 16, 2010 1:46 PM

I pledge to read at least half a book this year.

Posted by: Lucas at December 16, 2010 1:57 PM

Wordpress is super easy. Highly recommend it. ;)

Posted by: prairiegirl at December 16, 2010 4:04 PM

I'm so excited about this. Love all the new ideas. So far I've got six books read and three reviews ready to go for Jan 1.

Yay! Cannonball III is go.

Posted by: Mrs Smith at December 16, 2010 4:08 PM

I'm glad this was re-posted because I missed it the first time. I want in this year! Going to go send an email and set up a new blog for it right now.

Posted by: pickled tink at December 16, 2010 5:42 PM

I also missed this post the first time round. I only arrived here when Alabama Pink was leaving, and I am happy at the legacy she left behind, and happy at Pajiba's contributions. I'm all in.

Posted by: idleprimate at December 16, 2010 10:24 PM

I am so excited about this. Especially if we don't have to have our own blogs. Technically I have an orphaned blog with one post. It's kind of pathetic. Can't wait to get started!

Posted by: Tits McGee at December 17, 2010 12:12 AM

Yay! I'm so excited! There are periods where I'll read a lot of books, but then I get lazy and just watch everything on Hulu for a couple months instead.

Posted by: crapface at December 17, 2010 1:04 PM

Remind me again what the minimum length of the books need to be, please? Besides reading a lot of novellas, most of my reading is on a Kindle now. There was a minimum in the past, right?

Posted by: krix at December 30, 2010 12:42 AM

Nevermind on the previous question, I found the answer.

Minimum of 150 pages, in case anyone else needs to know.

One thing to consider is that not everyone is going to like or accept us in life even if we like them. The comment that has upset you sounds like she does not like you and is just attempting to upset you - I wouldn't believe about it as criticism but just an insult. The other thing that comes to mind is that people say nasty points for all types of causes and issues - perhaps she is jealous of you, or doesn't like herself, or sees you as a threat, or wants to become top dog - all kinds of motives and truly it just doesn't issue because who and what you are is your business and it's important that you simply like you.

Undeniably believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason appeared to be on the web the easiest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people think about worries that they just don't know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side effect , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks

French is a Romance language spoken as a first language by around 136 million people worldwide. A total of 250 million speak it as either a first or as a second language. Moreover, roughly 110 million people learn French as a second or third language. French speaking communities are present in 56 countries and territories. Most native speakers of the language live in France, the rest live essentially in Canada, particularly Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario, as well as Belgium, Algeria, Switzerland, Monaco, Luxembourg, and certain places in the U.S. states of Maine and Louisiana. Most second-language speakers of French live in Francophone Africa, arguably exceeding the number of native speakers.

We pretty much appreciate your website post. You will find a multitude of tactics we could put it to decent use while having little or no effort on time and hard earned cash. Thank you so much for helping make this post give light to many concerns we have come across before now.

I've developed some deep relationships over the past couple of years blogging and I realize that those relationships manifest themselves in the links I find when I do my 28x a daily ego search over at Technorati.
