So I saw this tweet the other day:
What is the best movie you've ever seen that features two equally brilliant performances? pic.twitter.com/qdSWG5AkAs
— Taste of Cinema (@davidcinema) February 9, 2022
And I immediately thought of a few things. One: The Nice Guys, which I watched again last weekend, and was struck yet again about not just what must be Ryan Gosling’s absolutely best role (sorry, Drive, you’re fantastic and I love you, but this bloke is made for comedy), but by his incredible comedic chemistry with Russell Crowe. It’s a great indictment of the industry that there isn’t a series of these films. Two: Titane, in which Agathe Rousselle and Vincent Lindon put on a masterclass of twisted empathy and human connection. And, of course, three and four: my favourite films of all time, Heat, and the Before Trilogy, which are all built, to various degrees, around a duo of more-than-perfect performances.
Here are some of the suggestions that Twitter had in response:
Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey were incredible in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. pic.twitter.com/XIwvjACnLs
