Twitter Users Ponder Actor Pairings That Should Have Won an Award For Their Chemistry

Aftersun is a truly mind-boggling movie. It just doesn’t make any sense to me—any sense at all—that it can be writer-director Charlotte Wells’ first feature. How the hell does that work?! You make a few shorts, then decide to take the jump into full length, and the first thing that you produce is Aftersun?! I’m sorry, but that is some nefarious, deal-at-the-crossroads-level kind of mischief. Of all the films I’ve seen over the past few years—and I’ve seen some great ones—perhaps none have stayed with me as much as Wells’ astonishing debut. Assured and quietly devastating, deeply cinematic, it resonated with me powerfully on a personal level—and a huge part of that was the film’s central cast. Paul Mescal proved why he is one of the most exciting young actors working today, delivering a heartrending, un-showy performance, and he was more than matched by his co-star, eleven-year-old Frankie Corio, whose honest and layered portrayal of a daughter coming to terms with her memories and perception of her father absolutely blew me away. Greatest child actor performance ever? Maybe. It’s up there. Even more importantly, the two actors had truly wonderful, lived-in, and believable chemistry together. Without that, the film would not work.
