Tucker Carlson, who was fired from his position at Fox News two weeks ago, will launch a new show that he says will be similar to his old one, on the right-wing social media platform Twitter.com. Carlson, who decided against negotiating his way out of the non-compete clause in his Fox contract, instead accuses the network of fraud and breach of contract in order to free himself from the non-compete. Carlson’s lawyers accuse Fox News, and Rupert Murdoch personally, of breaking material promises not to leak private messages. Fox News denies it has.

Lawsuits and counter-lawsuits are all but inevitable. In the meantime, private texts that have surfaced in the last couple of weeks, proving that Tucker Carlson’s sexism and racism are not just an act for television, have apparently not diminished his popularity. Given Twitter’s already significant presence of Nazis, incels, and men’s rights activists, the platform seems to be a natural fit for Carlson.

The social media platform is now almost completely useless for anyone who doesn’t want to wade through a cesspool of right-wing talking points, conspiracy theories, and hate-fueled messages. The site appears singularly dedicated to either promoting or reacting to right-wing extremism. Elon Musk, who initially claimed he would run a non-partisan centrist website, has clearly abandoned that illusion. In recent days, Elon Musk, the second richest man in the world, has been promoting the belief that the Allen, Texas shooting was a false flag operation.

From a business perspective, it’s an interesting move. It will almost certainly hasten the exodus of millions of users, but it’s also likely to attract an even more fervent base of right-wing and MAGA supporters. However, Musk has not proven to be adept at running the platform, and he has had a very public falling out with former allies Bari Weiss and Matt Taibbi. How long can the relationship between Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk last? Musk is not as willing to conceal his feelings when he’s upset, as Fox News has done for at least the past few years regarding Carlson. Meanwhile, Carlson has never been well-liked by his employers, having been fired by CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News.
