The Dixie Chicks' Natalie Maines Weighs In on Election, Still Not Ready to Make Nice

As a person, there’s not a female musician I like more than Natalie Maines. I’m not even a country fan, but I still force feed my daughters the Dixie Chicks because I want them to grow up and be like Maines: Strong, talented, opinionated, and takes no shit. A lot of celebrities are willing to stand up and voice their politics, but few are as willing to do so when it means alienating their fanbase, as Maines did in 2003 when she spoke out against the Iraq war and said she was ashamed to have George W. Bush as the President (this was before W. had completely frittered away his 9/11 favorables).

In turn, Maines received death threats. Country radio banned her. For a few years, the career of the Dixie Chick was cooked, which made it all the more sweeter when Taking the Long Way won album of the year at the Grammys in 2007, and “Not Ready to Make Nice” won song of the year.

My, how times have changed since 2003, huh?

Of course, not everything has changed. There are still bleeding scrotums who object even to this tweet:

By and large, however, Maines is beloved in 2016.

Damn straight, she’s a legend.
