If there were a legal way for you to taste human flesh without harming anybody, would you? For a group of ten friends, the answer was ‘Sure, why not?’ And so they enjoyed a very unusual brunch that boasted apple strudel, mimosas, and cannibal tacos. Their story was shared on Reddit by user IncrediblyShinyShart , who explained how a motorcycle accident led to part of his leg being amputated. So, he decided to eat it and share that experience with friends.

You might think this must be a hoax. Well, there are pictures as proof. Though I warn you, they are VERY graphic right out the gate. Thankfully(?), Vice interviewed this self-proclaimed cannibal about the experience. So those already feeling faint can get the idea without the nightmarish slide show.

Shiny has chosen to remain anonymous but revealed that following the accident, he asked the hospital for the amputated remains of his leg and foot. “Originally I wanted to have it taxidermied or freeze-dried,” He told Vice, “How cool would it be to have my freeze-dried or taxidermied foot standing around the house as a lamp or a doorstop or something?”

He did end up creating a cast of it, but before that, Shiny sliced off a part of the shin with the half-baked idea of eating it. “The skin was already kind of off from the surgery,” leaving a big chunk of muscle exposed,” Shiny explained. “I just took the muscle. I put it in a plastic bag and put it in my freezer. You know that scene in National Lampoon’s Family Vacation where Chevy Chase is just saying, ‘This is crazy, this is crazy, this is crazy?’ That’s how I felt. I thought, “This is probably the peak weirdness of my life. I hope it doesn’t get weirder than this.”

As a means of closure, he cremated the rest of the leg and invited 11 friends over to share a taste of the bit he’d saved for consumption. One declined. A chef friend agreed to cook the shin, and did so fajita-style with peppers and onions. Vice has photos of the process, which are totally mundane unless you know that’s not beef in the skillet. As to the taste, Shiny described it as “almost like venison,” with a “beefy” toughness. One friend spit him out, but their spirits were high, cracking jokes and bringing a joyful end to a traumatic time for the 38-year-old.

Shiny said in part:

The outpouring of compassion and empathy I received from my friends and my loved ones really helped me take on the challenge of this big change in my life. So I was taking care of this body part that took care of me for so long. I was paying homage to it and giving it a proper send-off…I’m so much happier now than I could conceive of being before. And it’s because of this time where my life was threatened and I persevered through it. Eating my foot was a funny and weird and interesting way to move forward.

Shiny’s is a funny and totally weird story of cannibalism and brunch, but also an inspiring one of community, love, and resilience. And it reminds me of another shocking, strange, and surprisingly heart-warming true story about a man who couldn’t let go of his amputated leg. Anyhow, imagine you’re Shiny’s friend, and he invites you to this very special meal. What do you say? Would you say yes to cannibal tacos?
