Have you ever been bored and started randomly dicking around on Spotify just to see what you could find? The majority of you probably have, and you may have even heard of a man named Matt Farley. He goes by many names, over 700 actually, and has over 22,000 songs, many of which are about poop, pee, and things of similar nature. One of his bands, and how I was introduced to him, is a band called The Toilet Bowl Cleaners, which my nine-year-old siblings inadvertently found. They have disgusting songs, among them “The Poop Song,” “Poop in my Fingernails,” “The Poop Poop Poop Poop Song,” and my personal favorite, “I Pooped On Santa’s Lap.”

One weird band with a fixation on poop is all fine and dandy, but recently, I came across another of Matt Farley’s songs called “The Declan Poop Song” by a band of another name, “The Odd Man Who Sings About Poop, Puke and Pee.” My first thought was that if he has gotten to a bottom-of-the-barrel name such as my own, he must have tons of these [Insert Name] Poop Songs. I was very much correct. Go ahead look up “The [Insert Your Name Here) Poop Song,” and there will almost certainly exist a song that combines your name with the word “poop.” There will probably also be a song that combines your name with “Happy Birthday.”

My second thought was, “Hey! This sounds like the Toilet Bowl Cleaners guy!” After some research, I discovered I was correct about that, too. None of his songs do very well on their own, but the sheer volume of them earns Farley around $65,000 a year, fractions of a cent at a time.

In addition to his toilet humor songs, he also has bands devoted to various names (some of which do not even include the word “poop”), and various cities and towns, he has a band devoted to paranormal creatures, and an absolute BOP of a song called “The Mothman Song,” which has found some additional success on TikTok. Among his other bands are, “The Strange Man who Sings about Dead Animals,” (with songs about dead animals), “The Hungry Food Band” (with songs about food), and much, much more. I did some more digging and found that he had an album called “The Ultra Right Wing Conservatives” from 2008, parodying the Republican party, including one song about building a wall around the U.S.- Mexico border as a joke. (Ouch.) It has since been deleted. Performing under the band name Papa Razzi and the Photogs, he also has a song called, “Mike Daisey, Why You Gotta Tell Lies To Ira Glass?” about the guy who lied about his experiences in a popular episode of This American Life about conditions in Apple factories.

Matt, who operates out of his basement, also used to write custom songs, many of which have been used on the podcast Reply/All. In 2016, he performed “Used to be a Pizza Hut” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
