This is not a good story, but it has an uplifting ending.

A man by the name of Geris Hilton (which may or may not be his real name) posted this photo to his Facebook page.

The photo probably wouldn’t inspire much commentary from the average person, but the average person is not a disgusting garbage person who is dumb enough to publish his or her racist comments on a public forum.

The kid in the photo is the son of one of Gerri’s now-former co-workers. The comments made about the kid led to a series of firings.

“I didn’t know you were a slave owner,” commented Emily Irene Red.

“Send him back dude those f—kers are expensive,” a man named Dylan Kleeman reportedly wrote.

“But Massah I dindu nuffin,” another Facebook user, Baron O’Malley, reportedly wrote.

At least two of those people, including the guy who posted the original photo, were also fired.

Aside from the swift justice delivered by the employers, there’s also this inspiring coda to the story: The kid’s mom, Sydney, posted this message in response to the outpouring of warmth on behalf of her son, Cayden.

Can you imagine if someone was talking like that about your child? And can you imagine being rising above it to post that amazing response?

We’d all like to think that racism is being winnowed in younger generations, and I think that, overall, it probably is. But the racist chaff still floats to the surface, and now there are more mediums than ever with which to display it. In the age of social media, however, there are also more ways to expose the insidiousness. The quick actions of the employers here is commendable, and the message of love from Cayden’s mom is inspiring.
