Two weeks ago, when G/O Media sold Deadspin and laid off the entire staff, I wasn’t as bummed as I might should have been about the continuing decline of our industry because the staff of Deadspin was a replacement staff anyway. They had come in to replace the original Deadspin writers after they jumped ship because the G/O Media CEO told them they couldn’t write about politics anymore (many have since gone on to form Defector, which is a very good sports subscription site that also sometimes covers politics).

But in 2024, a job is a job in the digital publishing industry, so I didn’t hold it against the replacements for taking over. I had even checked in on nuDeadspin occasionally, and while it was a shell of its former self, it still beat Barstool Sports.

Since the sale to a company called Lineup Publishing, I have occasionally checked in on Deadspin to see what had become of it. At the moment, they are exclusively running the same syndicated content that Reuters and CBS Sports publish. It’s a soulless zombie site.

Soon, it will be a soulless zombie gambling site. As Tedium speculated last week, and as 404 Media confirmed today, Deadspin will become a gambling referral site.

“As we look to the future, our focus remains on delivering content that matters, through a platform known for its boldness, integrity, and insight into the world of sports and beyond,” Lineup Publishing wrote. “In order to best achieve this, we will be spending the next month moving to our own bespoke platform. All posts, images, and any other form of content will be retained.”

“We aim to be able to support delivery of this via partnerships within the sports betting industry,” the statement continues. “We believe that by doing this, we can deliver the top quality content people want to read, without impeding the quality and usability of the site.”

So, another gambling site. Just what digital sports media needs! Gambling is basically the future of sports “reporting,” so the move makes sense, and it may even be a more financially viable model than the old Deadspin. Hell, ESPN is basically a gambling referral site now, too.

In the meantime, if anyone needs any gambling tips, don’t ask Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter.
