The Oscars don’t matter, until they do. Once in a while, when that crusted-over racist Mayo paste that is the Academy get it right, they give an Oscar to the movie (or person) that deserves it. This year they did just that. In doing so, they demonstrated that the awards do matter, if only in that they still have a powerful ability to shine a spotlight on a film or filmmaker that the general public might otherwise overlook. Speaking anecdotally, I have already had a few friends who are not otherwise super plugged into the world of cinema ask me about Parasite. That wouldn’t have happened without that Oscar. Hopefully that can then have a snowball effect, and after their viewing of Parasite they end up checking out the rest of Bong Joon-ho’s masterful back catalogue. Fandom, and an awareness of a virtuoso talent they might have otherwise missed, is sure to follow. The other thing they’ll likely discover in not too long is Bong Joon-ho’s absolutely delightful personality. Seriously, the man is a treat. Funny, humble, insightful. All of those qualities are on full display in a Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’ he hosted a few months back, before the Oscar wins. You can check out the full AMA here, but below are some highlights:
