Vince Gilligan Catches up to My 'Better Call Saul' Concerns

I loved Breaking Bad with all my black heart and soul, and of all my favorite television series, it closed out with one of the best endings — in other words, I felt very satisfied. The thing about a show like that, and an ending like that is, you don’t necessarily want to go back. So when I heard Vince Gilligan and Co. were thinking about doing a spinoff series, my first thought was complete and utter disinterest. I dig Bob Odenkirk, he was perfectly cast as crafty-sleazy, sometimes hapless lawyer, Saul Goodman, just as he is as not-so-clever Deputy Bill over on the Fargo there. But Bob should keep moving on to other things, just as Gilligan should; these spinoff things so rarely work well, if at all. Wouldn’t we all rather see a new spark catch fire than to keep trying to re-kindle an old flame?

Not that he isn’t smart enough to already have thought out all these things — I’m sure he has — but Gilligan and AMC seem to want to try pushing forward with the Breaking Bad momentum. Heck, even Aaron Paul has been enthusiastic about making an appearance, and there are questionable rumors Walter White will pop in. But that doesn’t make me excited, it makes me a little sad. Both Paul and Bryan Cranston are great actors who should carry on, not get stuck in a moment they can’t get out of (sorry, bad U2 grammar there).

The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Gilligan, who talks delays and wonders whether his new series will be Frasier or After MASH:

Shit, that was depressing.
