This Heartwarming Coke Commercial Reminds Us That the Misery of Parenting Is Worth Every Damn Second
I like that line from Spike Jonze’s Her delivered by Amy Adams: “Falling in love is a crazy thing to do. It’s kind of like a socially accepted form of insanity.” Romantic love and parental love are not dissimilar in that way. Parents will occasionally have this fleeting though: “Why am I doing this?” Why did I sign up to be a chauffeur who spends his downtime cleaning up messes, making lunches, tripping over sh*t, changing diapers, and wasting half the day cutting crusts off of sandwich bread and trying to squeeze a wriggling, screaming child into an outfit I’m going to have to remove and launder an hour later?
The answer is obvious: You didn’t know it would be like this, and now that you’re in it, you have no choice in the matter. But this is where the insanity comes in: Even after you understand what parenting entails, you still choose to DO IT AGAIN.
Why? Because we’re all crazy in the head, but it’s that insanity that keeps our species alive. This Coke commercial from Argentina basically captures, in one minute, the misery and elation of being a parent.
