The Most Awkward Thing You'll See Today: Ted Cruz' Uncut Campaign Ad Footage

Political campaigns are full of weird, detailed rules about where finances can come from and in what amounts, and candidates are constantly sneaking through loopholes in order to do basically whatever they want anyway, but this is one loophole I hadn’t heard of. If I understand this YouTube video’s brief intro correctly (yes, this is where I get my information, and yes, I’m a terrible uninformed citizen), candidates aren’t allowed to coordinate with super PACs, so they just post hours and hours of random footage online, so that groups can form their own ads without actually working directly with the person running for office.

Ted Cruz’s campaign did this earlier this sumer, but because no one wants to watch 12 hours of behind-the-scenes footage of Cruz and his family, it just sat there for months. That is, until CNN’s Chris Moody finally bit the boring bullet and sifted through all that footage to find the best and most awkward moments for our enjoyment. Do you want to watch Ted Cruz’s family talk woodenly about how great Ted is for America while someone coughs repeatedly off-camera? Yes you do. Do you want to watch take after take of “candid” clips to revel in the staged awkwardness of these moments? Yes. Because they’re beautiful. Here’s a quick rundown of the staged moments that required many, many takes just to make Ted Cruz look like a less robotic creature who definitely does understand human interactions:

—Casual walking
—Dr. Suess quotes
—Hugs
—Basically everything he’s ever said or done
—Family prayer time

Because sure, we *definitely* don’t want to politicize tragic acts of gun violence, but let’s take multiple takes with different options to make sure your belief in and appreciation of god looks just right for voters.
