Tim Bergling, better known to music fans as Avicii, died this morning at the age of 28. His representative revealed that Bergling had passed away in Muscat, Oman, and that no further details would be given. Bergling had retired from performing in 2016 due to health reasons, including acute pancreatitis and the removal of both his gallbladder and appendix. The pancreatitis was attributed to heavy drinking, something that’s common among the EDM scene. No cause of death was listed.

If you’re a millennial like me, and if you were in any bar in the early 2010s, the chances are the music of Avicii was utterly inescapable. His brand of EDM — very pop inspired, rooted in the Scandi-dance scene of contemporaries like Swedish House Mafia, and very easy to sing and dance along to — was practically tailor-made to top the charts. Every club played Avicii. You would seldom end a night without hearing Wake Me Up or Hey Brother. The country-flecked dance-thumping beat of Wake Me Up was the earworm of 2013. For someone who wore his influences proudly on his sleeve, he still managed to make music that was inimitably Avicii.

Losing talent at any age sucks, but it’s especially sad when the figure in question made such an indelible impact on pop culture in such a short amount of time. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
