A heads up: there are minor spoilers for Avengers: Age of Ultron here, though nothing that wasn’t in all the trailers so calm your butts.

A lot of us were surprised to see that Bruce Banner was designated as Black Widow’s love interest in the movie, when the first Avengers seemed to be pretty clearly lining her up with Hawkeye. But instead they decided to make Clint and Natasha just BFFs (or maybe it’s because Hawkeye called Black Widow a slut too many times, who knows?), and reset her sights on Hulk. If that surprised you, you weren’t the only one. Scarlett Johansson admits that when first read the script, she didn’t really get it.

I didn’t really understand or expect the connection that these two make with one another. [It] seemed very unlikely to me when I first read the script. I met with Joss and I was like, “Why are you putting these two together?”

It’s kind of like the guy who was like, “Remember the first time we saw each other, we had something!” And the girl is like, “I don’t even remember you.”

Ruffalo, not surprisingly, was super into the romance.
