One of the hardest things about loving the Adult Swim series Rick and Morty is how it refuses to commit to us. Maybe we didn’t notice the show when it was a rough-and-tumble web-series from the wrong side of the ‘net. But then it grew into a full-series, with hot buzz and the kind of network gig that’d make parents proud instead of eye-roll. Rick and Morty is great for good times, spinning insane sci-fi stories about parallel universes, memory-invading parasites, giant exploding Santas who rain blood and viscera down on human holidays to remind us of the joys of technology. But it also gets us, sharing tales of heartbreak and self-sacrifice, like that season two cliffhanger that still has us reeling with feels. And we look back on these episodes fondly. But when it comes to pinning Rick and Morty down for something more—namely a third season—things get squirrelly.

Sure, there’s vague promises of a spring affair. But it’s nearly spring, and no date is set. Though Rick and Morty gives us gifts like teasers and a rad immersive site to explore, it’s not what we really want or need. It’s not new shows.

Then, just when we think we’re done with this show—for good this time!—Rick and Morty pops up again, promising the opening scene of season three. Check it out below. You won’t believe what it has in store.

Rick and Morty is an asshole boyfriend. And we still don’t know when season three’s coming. Sigh. But when it does, you know we’ll be there, our self respect checked with our hopes, dreams, and plumbusses.
