Purely for Educational Purposes: Ellen Degeneres and Britney Spears Demonstrate Gangnam Style

Here’s my rule of thumb for web culture trends: I will ignore the first two Internet headlines referring to a new trend (say, planking), but after that, I will typically cave in just so I know what the hell it is that people are referring to. Gangnam is the newest dumb trend that everyone is buzzing about, and that Adam Sandler will refer to lamely in a movie two years from now, which is about two years after it will have lost all cultural relevancy.

Here were the first two headlines about Gangnam style I ignored. That second post — from my Pajiba/Uproxx colleague, Josh Kurp — noted “If we have to explain ‘Gangnam Style’ to you, you’re not very good at the Internet,” which is totally untrue: I’m very good at the Internet, although I’m mostly good at filtering out things I don’t want to know about.

But hell if the trend hasn’t transcended to “Ellen,” where Britney Spears and Simon Cowell came on, and then Britney and Ellen actually demonstrated it along with Psy, the South Korean man who originated it.

This is all for educational purposes. It is not an endorsement. I will note, however, that it appears that Britney Spears is perpetually under heavy sedation these days. Did her handlers turn her into a Stepford?
