Once Again, SNL's Cut Sketch Was Better Than Much of the Actual Show

Ever since hitting rock bottom with Donald Trump, Saturday Night Live has been working its way toward what could possibly be a real, true renaissance. They’re not back to Peak SNL, and they’re not as political as many of us want them to be, but with episodes like those hosted by Tina & Amy, or Adam Driver’s fantastic turn, the show is clearly in an upswing. Still, even in these great episodes, while the high points are through the roof, a good portion of the show is still not even close to worth your time.

That’s why these Cut for Time sketches, which SNL has taken to releasing on YouTube, are usually so confusing. So often, the cut sketches are better than at least a third (if not more) of what’s left in. In this week’s episode, hosted by Melissa McCarthy, there were some really great sketches. But there were also some major turds. (*cough* Movie Night *cough*) This cut sketch, which has Melissa McCarthy playing a Supermarket Spree contestant who HAS A PLAN, isn’t stellar, but it does feature McCarthy eating mayonnaise straight out of the jar and throwing a giant bag of rice at Vanessa Bayer.

That can’t be the end of that bit, right? Do we think there was a follow-up segment that was also cut? Is that why this was scrapped? Maybe they were worried about having too many pre-recorded segments, and couldn’t cut Kyle Mooney’s weird rap battle without Kanye throwing a fit? That’s my guess. It always comes back to Kanye throwing a fit.
