Neill Blomkamp Confirms Ripley Will Be in New 'Alien' Film; Sigourney Weaver Wants Proper Ending

I’m jumping up and down and screaming, you guys! Join me!

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of Aliens, so it’s Alien, Aliens and this movie.”

For a director who wants to keep news about his plans for an Aliens sequel on “hyper-lockdown,” Blomkamp is being pretty forthcoming. Since he and Sigourney Weaver are currently on publicity rounds for Chappie, Weaver is also speaking out, revealing that she and the director began discussing his ideas on the Chappie set “almost right away.” I freaking love that as a fan of the series, Blomkamp couldn’t wait to share his plans with Weaver (celebrities, they’re just like us!). The director admitted having Ripley on set affected him:

“Over the years, I came up with a story for a film in that universe that I wanted to make. And then when I talked to her about her experience making those films and what she thought about Ripley and everything else, it informed and changed the film I wanted to make into something different. It just sort of stuck with me. A year later, when post-production was winding down on Chappie, I started fleshing out the idea for a film that would contain Sigourney. Fox never knew. I just worked on it when I could. Before I knew it, I had this really awesome film with a lot of artwork and a lot of backstory. And then I didn’t know whether I was going to make it or not. So I just kind of sat on it for a while.”

I don’t know about you, but hell if I could sit on that. This is the most exciting news since Ridley Scott announced he was making a sequel himself — of course, that turned out a hot mess, but now we have a real chance for redemption. Blomkamp’s plan to disregard Alien 3 and Resurrection is really the only way to go, and as Weaver says, “”take Ripley out of… sort of orbiting around in space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story.”

Straight from the horses’ mouths:
