Mayor Corey Booker — or, should I say Senator-elect Corey Booker — presided over the marriage of seven gay couples yesterday morning seconds after midnight, after New Jersey became the 14th state to allow gay marriages (and Governor Chris Christie also decided against appealing yesterday). It was the first time that Booker had officiated a wedding ceremony, having lifted his personal ban. “I made a decision as mayor … that I would not marry anybody until I could marry everybody,” Booker said. “I’m so happy I did this, and I did it in the right way.”

During the gleeful ceremony of Joseph Panessidi and Orville Bell, the first gay couple to be married in New Jersey, there was, unfortunately, a shout-y anti-gay marriage protestor in the midst. Looking to disrupt the ceremony, the protestor shouted “this is unlawful in the eyes of God!”

Booker’s response was priceless. Skip to the 2:00 mark for the brilliant slap down.
