It’s real. Jon Stewart, our patron saint of satire, is leaving us for parts unknown. He shared the news first with the audience in attendance of last night’s taping of The Daily Show, and from there the news spread like wildfire, breaking hearts and spurring speculation.

What’s next for Stewart? Is this the end of The Daily Show? If not, who will replace him? In his actual announcement, which you can watch below, Jon doesn’t give us the answers we desire. But he does display that blend of sincerity, heart and humor that’s made him an institution to a generation.

Stewart doesn’t know when he’ll officially leaving the show, saying, the details are still being worked out with Comedy Central. He hits us right in the heart with “This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host and neither do you….It’s been an absolute privilege. It’s been the honor of my professional life, and I thank you for watching it. For hate-watching it. Whatever reason you were tuning in for.”

As to what Stewart should do next, some are speculating he may return to stand-up, or might make more movies in the wake of his directorial debut Rosewater. I have my own thoughts.

Meanwhile, others have suggested that Stewart is dropping out of the show in time to avoid the 2016 Presidential election coverage, but maybe he could be the subject of that coverage? #JonStewartForPresident

The other hopeful hashtag to pop up following Stewart’s announcement regards who should take The Daily Show’s helm once he steps down. #JessicaWilliams4TheDailyShow

We’d be on board for that.

Kristy Puchko is still hoping this is all a bad dream brought on by mixing wine and ice cream.
