How is it that whenever Jon Stewart takes a break, the world blows up? He’s been away again for a couple weeks, and in that time all kinds of things have happened, though none more important in America than the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. With all the madness that has emerged in the wake of the tragic incident, it’s nice knowing that someone like Stewart is there to make sense of things and bring us all back to what matters. Thankfully, he’s back on the air this week, and last night he delivered a segment (three, in fact), which did just that.

He started with a pre-opening gag, then the usual ribbing on Fox News and their racist nonsense of questioning the raising of race as an issue to begin with. It got bigger and more heartfelt than that, though, with Stewart talking directly to Fox News anchors and white people everywhere about the simple fact that being a black person in America is an inherently different experience from being white. It’s the kind of call to sanity Stewart has made his mission, and here he does it effectively, and beautifully.

In the next hilarious segment, correspondent Michael Che tried to find somewhere in the world he wouldn’t face potential fatal violence just for being black. Hint: it’s not on this world.
