Having grown up in Western, Pennsylvania, there’s a special place in my heart for the complete trainwreck that is its accent, commonly known as Pittsburghese or the Yinzer accent. As people from the region can tell you, it’s on the wane. But cheers to cultural preservationist Seth Meyers, who’s been doing his damndest to share its dulcet details with the world by making celebrities perform it on Late Night.

First up, Joe Manganiello came to promote Magic Mike XXL, but ends up revealing his Yinzer accent from a would-be show that never made it to air. Check the 2-minute mark:

For those who aren’t fluent in Pittsburghese, “n’at” means “and that” as in “et cetera, or whatever.” Like “Yinz wanna’ go see dem Stillers n’at?” And “yinz” is the plural form of “you” that the English language frankly demands. (Here’s a glossary if you’re interested.)

Next, we’ve got Pittsburgh native Zachary Quinto, recalling his experience as a local hero complete with Yinzer talk starting at the 2-minute mark:

For the record jagoffs, Pittsburgh did take the Ugliest Accent honor. It’s a point of pride.

Last fall, Carnegie Mellon alum Patrick Wilson showed his Yinzer pride talking about Giant Iggle. (2-minute mark again)

I appreciate Meyer’s enthusiasm, if not his feeble attempt at the accent. But one thing, Meyers: Pittsburghese does exist beyond the three rivers. My hometown of Johnstown has a whole webseries that relishes in all things Yinzer. Enjoy “Greg and Donny.”

Bonus: you might remember Greg as a mugger from Kroll Show’s Pawnsylvania ep:

Want to speak Yinzer? Sure you do. Here’s a helpful song to help you get the accent dahn:

Kristy Puchko needs to red up and get some gobs, if yinz are coming over n’at.
