HBO Looks to Be Gearing Up to Give Us One of the Year's Most Incredible Performances

When it came to Oscar nomination snubs last year, I thought that David Oyelowo’s omission for his role in Selma was as inexcusable as Ava DuVernay’s. I know some people didn’t think his performance as Martin Luther King Jr. was that impressive, saying it was basically just an impression. And those people are wrong. The wrongest. He was able to embody this famous, important man in a way that was recognizable, yet intensely personal. I thought it was easily one of the top performances of last year. And now it looks like he’s about to outdo himself.

Nightingale is an HBO orginal drama with Oyelowo as the only cast member (though his character has several personalities). HBO describes it as

A provocative drama that probes the darkest corners of a disturbed mind, as a war veteran begins to unravel thread by thread. This searing story of solitude and isolation offers a poignant look at how life has failed one man.
In this behind-the-scenes video, Oyelowo talks about just how insanely difficult it is to play this kind of emotional role opposite only yourself. He decided to stay in character for the entire three weeks of filming, which always makes me cringe because it seems so unhealthy psychologically, but from these snippets, it DOES look to have paid off.
