'Girls' Jemima Kirke Shares Her Abortion Story In Poignant PSA

One of the biggest criticisms hurled at the HBO series Girls is that it’s created from a place of privilege. It’s penned by an affluent, educated, straight white woman. It’s cast is largely white, and it’s four main stars all have parents who are more or less famous. So, privilege. Sure.

But in this deeply personal video from the Center for Reproductive Rights, Girls star Jemima Kirke talks about how the stigma over abortion impacted her choice in getting one. This coming from a woman of privilege:

Kirke rejects that stigma now to create a better world for her daughters. I admire her bravery in sharing a story that could further expose her to criticism. But Kirke is not alone. Center for Reproductive Rights notes 1 in 3 women will have an abortion in their lifetime.

Too often the fight for a woman’s right to choose becomes one of rhetoric, instead of one focused on the people it impacts. CRR’s youtube page is a platform dedicated to these stories.
