George Lucas Talks About His 'Star Wars' For Girls

We send a lot of crap George Lucas’ way, and for good reason. The man contributed a hell of a lot to our collective childhood, but he’s also frequently going back and trying to ruin those contributions. However, his new movie, Strange Magic, sounds pretty cool. It’s an animated musical that he’s been working on (off and on) for fifteen years, and it was inspired by his daughters.

I did Star Wars for 12-year-old boys, and obviously it was a big hit and everybody loved it. I have… three girls, and I used to read Wizard of Oz to my daughter all the time, and I just figured I’ll make one of these for girls, because you’re not supposed to make movies for girls.
He goes on to say that the movie is about chasing love, and finding the difference between real love and infatuation. And okay, the clip they show at the start of the interview below may make your ears bleed a little. And yes, I wish he didn’t feel an adventure story for girls still had to be about chasing love (The Wizard of Oz sure as hell wasn’t!), but still, props to George Lucas for making a movie for girls. Not that it’s all out of the goodness of his heart. When asked if he thinks there’s any reality to the idea that a movie for girls won’t be popular, he makes it clear that he does expect this to make money.
I think girls go to the movies just like everybody else does. That’s a marketing reality, but it’s very powerful. Very powerful. It’s very hard to counter it. They have their ideas about what movies sell, that’s what they do, the industry is kind of run by the marketing department. [Strange Magic]’s got monsters and swordfighting and all that kind of stuff, which they’re playing up. They’re taking down the music and the fairies.
