I just can’t quit these damn things. Like a slobbering, slavering, quivering wreck, I’m simply unable to get my fill of deepfakes. Each time I see one and post one I promise myself it’s the last time. Each time I say, ‘Okay, yes, that was cool and terrifyingly illuminating of the coming infopocalypse but I’ll leave this alone now.’ And each time it’s not long before I see another one and I come crawling right back into the arms of this impressive and scary technology, justifying the decision and rationalising the fascination.
Well, whatever. Observing deepfake tech evolve in real-time is simultaneously really fun and unnervingly scary with overtones of imminent doom, like watching a grizzly bear waddle towards you on its rear legs while it does a little jig and taps out a jaunty sounding rhythm with one set of front paw claws clacking against the other. So here’s Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt deepfaked into Kubrick’s classic, better-than-the-novel adaptation of The Shining:
