The incredible “Every Frame a Painting” series is like a master class in filmmaking condensed into eight minute YouTube videos. And, really, isn’t that the entire point of the internet? The man behind these, Tony Zhou, is back with a lesson on why David Fincher is a f*cking master of cinema.

The video also highlights why Gone Girl is expected (by me, probably by you, and confirmed by those who’ve seen it) to be spectacular. The big question surrounding this adaptation for so long was whether Fincher (and Gillian Flynn) could bring the tone and tension of the book to the screen. Because (and no spoilers here), while there is some amount of running and chasing and yelling in the book, most of the drama is within Nick’s head, or in the pages of Amy’s diary. But as Zhou so expertly lays out, this is what Fincher does best. He specializes in basic conversations, in exposition, and making them thrilling, with nothing but the power of the camera.

Prepare to be amazed.

And, if you have room for any more amazement in you, make sure to watch Zhou’s video on how Edgar Wright does visual comedy better than anyone else working today.
