We don’t tend to cover video games here too much at Pajiba. I mean, we touch on ‘em, now and then, and a number of us on staff love ‘em to bits. But they ain’t exactly our main area of discourse.

My own personal gaming time has shrunk to, at most, a tenth of what it once was. And yet some of the best, most emotionally involving memories I have of any media come from video games.

The first Metal Gear Solid; Final Fantasy 8, 9, 10; Shadow of the Colossus; The Last of Us — these were pivotal, gargantuan experiences in my life, and sometimes all it takes is the smallest video or audio cue and the emotional strings get plucked, set to resonate hard.

Like, for example, hearing this:

Within the first few notes I am immediately taken — ahem — far away. As soon as that guitar starts I am cresting a rise in a new land for the first time, arid soil beneath my horse’s hooves, majestic rock formations stretching away underneath an endless sky. I am stalking through the snow-covered ground of a mountain forest, rifle in hand, listening for the first sign of my deadly quarry. I am marching to meet certain death at the hands of traitors and cowards, taking comfort in the fact that though my time is done, my family may yet live.

When it comes to emotionally poignant memories, Red Dead Redemption is a vast reservoir, and John Marston is one of the all-time great video game protagonists.

Gamers have been waiting for the moment when a sequel would be announced for years, unsure if it would even ever come; but Rockstar Games have finally crested the rise and delivered unto us a hushed promise:

So though we do not cover video games too much here at Pajiba, when it comes…

don’t really…

…have a choice.

Details about Red Dead Redemption 2 are currently scant, and there is much speculation online as to whether it’ll be a sequel or a prequel but one thing’s for sure at least: John Marston will not be returning.
