This week, the Times TV critic James Poniewozik lamented the long breaks in between television shows these days, normalized during the pandemic and exacerbated by the writers’ strike. It is annoying that we’ve had to wait so long for the next seasons of Stranger Things and Severance. The final season of Ted Lasso aired a year AFTER Severance and is already being revived, and we still have to wait until 2025 for the next season of the Ben Stiller drama.

Yellowstone still takes the cake, however, because it will be nearly two years between the first half of a single season and the back half. When the first half aired in January 2023, we were told to expect the second half that summer. And then it was pushed to the fall. And then there were months when we didn’t know if Kevin Costner would return (he will not), and then the writers’ strike, and then they finally got around to filming the second half.

We still have a little more than two months to go, but we’re finally seeing the first footage from the back half, albeit interspersed with previous footage, here of Kevin Costner’s character. The teaser trailer seems to be setting up a civil war between family members Jamie and Beth Dutton. Really, the best part about this show — besides Cole Hauser’s smoldering quietness — is the insult wars between Beth and Jamie. They really hate each other.

The back half returns on November 10th. A sixth season is currently being negotiated with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as the de facto leads after the exit of Kevin Costner.

The key art, meanwhile, still emphasizes the presence of Costner, although it also portends his burial site.
