Will Forte Reveals How 'The Last Man On Earth' Would Have Ended If It Hadn't Been Cancelled

The Last Man On Earth will go down as a show too weird to live, but cruelly cut short before its time. Its final season ended on a world-rattling cliffhanger. But its cancellation means that fans will never know what was next for Tandy and his crew. Well, until now.

Will Forte has revealed the plot outline for the final season that Fox didn’t dare to make. And it’s brilliant, bold, tragic and darkly hilarious. Basically, it would have been perfection.

Season four of the post-apocalyptic sitcom ended with Tandy and company deciding to settle in a new area, rich with fruit trees and free-range goats. But their plans are threatened when a swarm of mysterious, gas mask-adorned people emerge from a massive underground bunker. Tandy looks upon them as they surround his family, and says, “Farts.” End of season. End of series.

On the “Good One” podcast, Forte revealed what would have happened had season five gotten the go-ahead. “Basically they had been in this bunker and they went down when the virus had first started,” Forte said of the gas-mask mob, “They had some kind of medical expert or scientist who knew, ‘At this certain point, the virus will be dormant. You’ll be safe to get back out.’ Then they see a bunch of stragglers — us. And we represent a real threat to them, because they’d thought everything was dead, so they quarantine us.”

Forte said there’d be “a couple of famous people in there,” though it’s unclear if he means that among the survivors would be big-name celebs playing themselves, like Bill Murray in Zombieland, or some comedy stars scoring brief cameos like Jack Black, Martin Short, and Will Ferrell have done on the show. But Forte notes these plague-fearing survivors are “very nice people. They look scary but they end up being nice people…And eventually we’d all get comfortable with each other, and they would kind of let one person out. They wouldn’t be scared anymore.”

Friendship leads to breaking the quarantine. And things go about how you’d expect. “We are immune to the virus but we’re carriers,” Forte says of Tandy’s group, “And so we would infect them and they’d die like wildfire. And then we’re back to just us. And maybe one famous person we could talk into staying around.”

No mention is made of what else might have happened in the season or what famous person Forte hoped to hook for that final cameo. But at least the question of what next has been answered, even if its revelation makes us wish Fox had given us just a few more eps. Meanwhile, the shambling reanimated corpse that is The Simpsons returns for its 30th season in September.
