If you’re under the age of, say, 30, you may have missed out on a subgenre of comedy that existed only in the 1980s, an era when MTV actually showed music videos, most of which involved half-naked women writhing around in cages while coked-up men with long hair who wore women’s make-up sang about shouting at the devil and unskinny bops.
It was a weird time, y’all.
The sex comedies of the time were also almost exclusively about 1) sticking it to the man, by 2) winning at contests as the underdog, and 3) having a lot of sex to synthesizer or saxophone scores. Even the Nerds got to bang the hot chicks. All of these sex comedies not only contained gratuitous amounts of nudity, but the gratuitous amounts of nudity were the main selling point.
To demonstrate, the movie posters usually looked like this:
You can probably see why these movies were sometimes referred to as “Boob Comedies.” It was not a progressive time in America, it was a time when the White House thought that AIDS was hilarious.
Clearly, a lot of these movies involved skiing, and those movies would always include topless women in snow, because male directors were fucking masochists. They also always included incredible stunt people who skied for the actors, and it was always obvious that stunt people were being used. Always.
It was those movies that this week’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode, “The Gang Hits the Slopes” was spoofing, and the parody was pitch fucking perfect, right down to the music choices (Rick Springfield, Van Halen, Huey Lewis!). I mean, it says something when characters from a show with titles like “The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby” finds the 80’s characters in this episode offensive.
But yes: Sticking one’s dick through a peep hole into a women’s locker room was an actual gag in these movies (that one happens to be from Porky’s), and yes, women were not allowed to wear tops in the 80s.
What made the episode next level was the inclusion of Dean Cameron, who was in 1987’s Summer School and 1990’s Ski School, which somehow was not a sequel to Summer School, though there was a Ski School 2, in spite of the fact that the original only made $18,000 at the box office, which goes to show you how popular boob comedies were on VHS.
Here’s Dean Cameron 25 years ago.
Here he was in Sunny.
He wasn’t the only guy from the 1980s in the episode. You guys recognize the guy who accused Dean Cameron of cumming in his burrito?
That was Courtney gains. He was the creepy kid in Children of the Corn.
He was also in a movie you might have heard of called Back to the Future.
Kevin Farley was also in the episode. You already know who he is.
And what about this woman? What 80’s movie was she from?
None of them. She’s only 32. She’s from Uzbekistan. She played Yvette in True Blood. They probably couldn’t track down Heather Campbell.
