During one of those “Truth or Dare” type games Andy Cohen likes to play on Watch What Happens Live, Bowen Yang confessed that a certain host of Saturday Night Live made multiple cast members cry.
“This man — this person, this host — made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday during the table read because he hated the ideas,” Yang said.
Other than to say that this person was “terrible,” Yang offered no more details, including the host’s name. We want to know. This is the Internet, so obviously, we are going to guess. And while we cannot say for sure, it’s not that hard to narrow it down. Here’s a list of the male hosts of SNL since Yang began working there, and we can all speculate idly and irresponsibly!
Woody Harrelson, David Harbour, Chance the Rapper, Harry Styles, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Adam Driver, J.J. Watt, RuPaul, John Mulaney, Daniel Craig, Tom Hanks, Chris Rock, Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Jason Bateman, Timothee Chalamet, John Krasinski, Dan Levy, Rege-Jean Page, Nick Jonas, Daniel Kaluuya, Elon Musk, Keegan-Michael Key, Owen Wilson, Rami Malek, Jason Sudeikis, Kieran Culkin, Jonathan Majors, Simu Liu, Paul Rudd, Will Forte, Willem Dafoe, Oscar Isaac, Jerrod Carmichael, Jake Gyllenhaal, Benedict Cumberbatch, Miles Teller, Brendan Gleeson, Jack Harlow, Steve Martin/Martin Short, Austin Butler, Michael B Jordan, Pedro Pascal, Travis Kelce, Pete Davidson, Bad Bunny, Nate Barzgate, Jason Momoa, Jacob Elordi, Shane Gillis, Josh Brolin, Ramy Youssef, Ryan Gosling.
I mean, look: Men who we think are lovely people could turn out to be huge assholes behind-the-scenes, but to make multiple cast members cry, it probably has to come from someone — likely a comedian — that the cast members look up to, which rules out two obvious suspects in Elon Musk and Jonathan Majors. It could be Jerrod Carmichael — and I’ve seen him be a confrontational asshole in his reality series — but he hosted a pretty good episode, the one right after The Slap, where he was asked by Lorne Michaels to come out and “heal the nation.” He doesn’t feel right. I bet Benedict Cumberbatch can be prickly, too, but that doesn’t feel right, either.
That, in my mind, leaves Eddie Murphy as the favorite — and this is who most people are guessing — because being told by an SNL legend that your ideas suck would make me cry. However, Dan Levy is a dark horse candidate here, if only because I’ve heard things and also because when someone you don’t expect to be an asshole acts like an asshole, it can be more hurtful.
Or maybe Brendan Gleeson is not the teddy bear we all think he is!
