Don't I Know You From Somewhere? Where You've Seen The Cast Of HBO's New Series 'Barry' Before

I don’t want to make anything close to an implication that Bill Hader’s new HBO series Barry is not good. It is, in fact, very good. For starters, Bill Hader is there and turns out, I really, really like him. But I can say that, two episodes in, I’m still trying to get a handle on exactly what kind of a show Barry is. Barry himself isn’t a killer so much as he’s broken, and disconnected from his fellow human (although side note, he’s also one-hundred-percent a killer in that he’s killed a lot of people). And his desire to get into acting is less a reflection of his professional calling or pursuit of fame than it is that a random acting class is where he’s felt more connected to other people than he has in years. It’s a significantly more profound show than I expected from the guy who did that Greg Is An Alien sketch. So I’m just having a hard time figuring out what to say about it.

Also, there’s the unexpected distraction of every scene being filled with a, “Oh, hey, it’s that guy!” moment. Guys like:

Stephen Root

Where You’ve Seen Him: I mean, like, all of the things. All of the things. You should know his name by this point. News Radio, Office Space, Dodgeball, Get Out, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fargo (the TV show), Justified, Boardwalk Empire, The Newsroom. That’s only half-way through his IMDB page. True Blood? The West Wing? I’ve watched all of both of those, I don’t even remember forgetting he was there. He’s basically in every movie. Just look close.

Where You’ve Seen Him:

Sarah Goldberg

Where You’ve Seen Her: Probably a lot of stuff, but who cares because she was Lolly in Hindsight and it was taken too soon and IT STILL HURTS.

Glenn Fleshler

Where You’ve Seen Him: Besides being the quiet, creepy guy in Barry, Glenn Fleshler has also played a quiet, creepy guy in True Detective (season one though, so it was a coherent quiet, creepy guy), and a quiet, creepy guy in Boardwalk Empire. Also, I’m sure he’s a lovely man in real life, and I’m thrilled that he’s doing so much with a name like Glenn Fleshler.

Where You’ve Seen Him Maybe: I didn’t actually recognize Carrigan nor have I watched any of the shows listed on his IMDB page, but during the course of my research, I did learn that when not creeped up for his character, Carrigan resembles Tom Hardy’s younger brother.

So, you know, good job on that.

Tyler Jacob Moore

Where You’ve Seen Him: I didn’t know Tyler Jacob Moore’s name before doing this post, and now I’m impressed that his real name (Tyler Jacob Moore) is the only name whiter than his character’s name of Ryan Madison. I feel like Tyler-Jacob-Moore-Ryan-Madison is either the group of cool girls or the singular cool girl at someone’s high school right now.

Anyway, Moore lost his TV virginity to Fiona Gallagher back in the first season of Shameless as Tony the cop. He deserved better than a quickie with a girl trying to get over her boyfriend outside of a kids’ basketball game in the backseat of a car for his first time. Unfortunately, it’s not the worst thing that happens to Moore in someone’s car.

Darrell Britt-Gibson

Where You’ve Seen Him: Darrell Britt-Gibson is one of those guys who I just started noticing everywhere, like Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and Keanu (hallowed be his name), but turns out he’s been around for years, including recurring roles on shows like Californication and The Goddamn Wire. Mostly that doesn’t matter, because he’s Shitstain on You’re The Worst, and holy shit was he funny in season two. Do you remember the feud? And then Lindsay did backing vocals on Sam’s diss track? And it was amazing? Oh god, I feel a rewatch coming on.

D’Arcy Carden

Where You- She’s Janet. She’s Janet. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. She’s amazing and she’s here and there’s a better-than-average chance that I wrote this whole post to make sure that you knew that Janet is on another show, and it’s really good. It’s not Janet-Gets-Married-Good, but it is working its way there. And goddamn, everyone needs to give Janet this show the chance to bring a little more Janet joy into our lives. Because good shows are about connection, and this show has connections to spare. Also, Janet is there. Janet.
