What's Streaming This Month? A Very Briny Seth Rogen, Talking To Himself

By Tori Preston | TV | August 1, 2020 |

An American Pickle (1).png

This is it, folks! We’re rolling into the end of the summer, and it’s pretty clear the pandemic is taking its toll. On our sanity, yes — but also on the amount of new streaming content to distract us from (*gestures at everything*). Unless you’re still a Quibi subscriber, because heaven help us all — they’ve got plenty of shows to launch, and some of them are Season 2 premieres, because time is a joke played on us all apparently.

Quibi

Can you believe Chance The Rapper’s Punk’d reboot is already launching it’s second season on August 17? How did they film it? And when? And why would you knowingly prank someone in this political and emotional climate? I’d rather watch “Quilt’d”: a show where distressed people are wrapped in quilts and handed mugs of hot cocoa. Anyway, there’s also a comedy/mystery series called Mapleworth Murders (August 10), written by and starring Paula Pell and John Lutz, and a reboot of The Fugitive where Boyd Holbrook outruns Kiefer Sutherland (August 3).

CBS All Access

If you’ve ever watched Star Trek and thought “Gee, that spaceship looks really big — why are we only seeing the especially capable and professional people on it?” then maybe you’ll enjoy Star Trek: Lower Decks (August 6), the animated spin-off created by Rick & Morty writer Mike McMahan that centers on a rag-tag group of Starfleet support officers:

Apple TV +

You know how Americans think football is a sport where dudes throw a ball, and the rest of the world thinks it’s a sport where the ball gets kicked? A sport made entirely of kicky-bois? Enter Ted Lasso, a new comedy about an America football coach who heads to the UK to coach the other type of football, and hilarity ensues (August 14). It’s Jason Sudeikis as Coach Taylor basically, and I know that because Dustin and Dan spent all of July making me watch Friday Night Lights over on Podjiba. I totally talk sport now, you guys.

Peacock

Former The Great British Bake Off presenters Mel and Sue are starring in a new comedy where they… kill people for money. Need I say more? Hitmen premieres August 6:

Disney+

If you’re a fan of Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, then you might be interested in Disney’s new documentary Howard, about the life of playwright and lyricist Howard Ashman (August 7). Ashman worked closely with Alan Menken and helped shape the animated films of Disney’s resurgence in the late 80s/early 90s, before he succumbed to AIDS at the age of 40.

HBO Max

Seth Rogen is playing his own grandson. No, I’m not talking about an American remake of Dark — I’m talking about An American Pickle (August 6), a new movie written by Miracle Workers’s Simon Rich about a dude who falls into a vat of pickles and wakes up a hundred years later, perfectly preserved. And presumably smelling of delicious pickle juice.

Hulu

Did you know Hulu has a time-traveling ballerina show? They do! It’s called Find Me In Paris and the third season debuts August 21. On the movie side of things, there’s a new Vince Vaughn flick called The Binge (August 28), which is apparently pretty much The Purge only instead of murder being legal for a day, it’s drugs and alcohol. I couldn’t find a trailer for it yet, which bodes super well.

Amazon Prime
Finally! It’s the Survivor-meets-Amazing Race mashup you’ve been waiting for: Welcome to World’s Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji (August 14)! This competition series, hosted by Bear Grylls, pits 66 teams against one another as they race around the world (and maybe drink urine? Who knows!).

Netflix

Netflix is having a weird month. They’ve picked up seasons 1&2 of Cobra Kai from YouTube (8/28), and their other salvage, Lucifer, is getting it’s fifth season (8/21). They’ve also got a too-timely third season of their Danish apocalyptic show, The Rain (8/6) in which a rain-borne virus wipes out humanity. Ouch, Netflix. F’ing OUCH.

For new shows there’s Biohackers (8/20) about, uh, biohacking, and Teenage Bounty Hunters (8/14), about teenage twins who are… bounty hunters. I’m not joking even a little bit.

And of course, we’ll finally get to see that movie about the drug pills and the superpowers starring Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dominique Fishback! Project Power drops on August 14.
