What We Know So Far About 'The Office' Spin-Off, 'The Paper'

The Office spin-off continues full speed ahead. Here’s what we know so far: It’s called The Paper, and it is a spin-off, not a reboot. The connection between the two series is the documentary crew. The same crew that made Dunder Mifflin famous now finds a new subject in a struggling, historic Midwestern newspaper, with the publisher trying to revive it using volunteer reporters.

How depressingly timely.

Greg Daniels returns as showrunner alongside Michael Koman (SNL, Nathan for You). Interestingly, Koman is the husband of Ellie Kemper, who starred in the original The Office, and Kemper’s sister, Carrie, was also a longtime writer on the original series.

Koman and Daniels continue to build the cast. While it’s set in the same universe as The Office, it’s not expected to feature any of the original actors. The first two cast members announced were Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore, the latter familiar to many from her role in White Lotus.

Previously announced cast members include Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Tim Key, and Ramona Young, who is perhaps best known for her role as Eleanor on Never Have I Ever.

This week, Daniels and Koman added Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, and Eric Rahill to the cast. As with Mindy Kaling and BJ Novak on the original series, all three actors will also serve as writers. The best-known of the three is Alex Edelman, the brilliant comic behind my favorite stand-up special of the year, Just for Us, on Max.

The series will air on Peacock.
