What Glenn Howerton's New Show Means for the Future of Dennis on 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia'

Spoilers, sort of

At the end of the most recent season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Dennis Reynolds’ future at Paddy’s was left in doubt, when he decided to be a responsible adult and follow his son and his son’s mother out of state. After the episode, there were a few interviews where Dennis hinted at Sunny fans worst fears: That Howerton might be leaving the show. Howerton didn’t say for sure, but he certainly suggested it was a strong possibility.

Yesterday, Glenn Howerton’s new sitcom got picked up at NBC. Called AP Bio, the series comes from Seth Meyers and former SNLer Mike O’Brien. It’s about a philosophy scholar played by Howerton, who loses out on his dream job and must go teach AP Biology in high school. He then decides to use his honor students as tools to get revenge on those who prevented him from getting his dream job. It also stars Patton Oswalt.

Sounds like a fun show. But that does that mean that Howerton is done on Sunny?

Maybe.

Howerton said he might leave the show. However, being on this sitcom might make it difficult to return to Sunny, although it should be noted that Kaitlin Olson also toplines a sitcom — a pretty good one, at that — called The Mick on Fox. However, Olson stars in The Mick and Sunny, but doesn’t write either show. Howerton has more obligations to Sunny because he stars and writes the show.

Maybe he doesn’t have to write anymore, but can still star? Who knows?

But, we also know that Sunny is taking a year-long hiatus , and by the time the year is over, AP Bio may be cancelled (as could The Mick, for that matter) because it’s not like network sitcoms have a great history of success. More are cancelled than not. To wit: There are only two NBC sitcoms returning next year, I believe (The Good Place and Superstore). So, in a year, this may all be moot, and whatever is secretly going on with the Sunny cast may be resolved.

In other words, we’ll see …
