Nick and Vanessa Lachey are back to ruin more lives in season five of Love Is Blind, which means more gratuitous shots of sexy strangers drinking mystery liquids from gold-tinted stainless steel goblets.

Now, a lot has been made of these goblets. I think some producer did an interview at some point saying they were for continuity, but now they’ve just become a trademark of the show. Chris Coelen, the creator of the show, put it this way:

“I don’t know. It’s something I like. When you turn on the show, you know it’s our show. It’s a very authentic, really true following of these people’s journeys, but I like the fact that we have this sort of connective tissue with that in a really light way, it’s fun.”

But here’s my question: do the people on this show all have oral fixations? Why do they always have those goblets around? Is it just water in there half the time? Are they not even allowed to have water bottles?

The thing about Love Is Blind, and this is especially true during the portion of the show when they’re still in the “pods,” is that it’s hard to know what time of day it is. Is it morning? Is there coffee in that goblet? An afternoon Diet Coke? Wine or beer in the evening? Or are they just always drinking alcohol, as I’m sure some LIB alums would allege? Also, sometimes they’re stemmed goblets and sometimes they’re stemless. How do they decide which one to use? Does it have to do with what they’re drinking? Is it a code? Am I just screaming into the void?

The first four episodes of Love Is Blind season 5 have dropped on Netflix, and the next three are coming September 29th.
